Hydraulic tank suction discharge size?

With all due respects, there is no reason to over engineer a 6 ft piece of hyd hose. Perhaps someone can show some figures of pressure losses using the same size of hose of the pump ports, and then double the size of the hose, using a temperature of 80 degrees. I would venture to say that the reduced pressure would be insignificant. Why is it that no one wants to increase the size of the QD's over the hose size. Is there a big loss there?

Iam not intrested in starting any arguments, Iam just pretty set in my beliefs, That oil strainers are PUMP SAVERS,...And they are also called filters, And just like maintaining your tractor, car, etc IF YOU DONT DO REGULAR SERVICE LIKE FILTER MAINTENCE, THEN YOU SHOULD EXPECT PREMATURE FAILURES, If the pump is ruined besause the strainer is pluged, That CLEARLY indicates (no) maintence, Common sence tells you,..THAT A STRAINER, IS NEEDED,... OR It WOULDNT BE PLUGED IN THE FIRST PLACE !!! Eric

I agree that a vacume gage takes the guess work out, and is a necessary option, Also I think its nice to see how the cold starts affect the flow of oil, and further will suggest that your oil is too thick for the temp, assuming that you are sure the strainer is (clean) , Its like having a high pressure gage, only more Important,.. Ill admit Iam a gauge type person, And feel that they tell a story ONLY a gage can tell, Eric

I understand the thoughts and arguments regarding tank strainers and I have to side with mrkubotakid.......if the strainer is properly sized and there is no problem with cold start excessivge vacuum then it can't do anymore harm than what it was designed for.....let's face it, most people that have suction strainers on mobile equipment don't clean them out regularly and that's more damaging than not putting anything on.....

Yes, they can effect the longevity of the pump but from personal experience I've seen more troubles with lack of maintenance procedures followed (someone taking out the fill screen and dropping part of their funnel or not cleaning the tank screen)

In a clean industrial indoors atmosphere I would change my thoughts but not in an outside dirty rough environment......

Heck, don't we have a few problems here with tank strainers clogging and doing funking things to tractors..??...would it be better if the junk just circulating......did the stuff that got caught in the strainer come from not changing the return filter and the filter element went into bypass sending all that stuff downstream into the tank where it go caught in the strainer anyways....

If a guy has problems with a tank strainer then he needs to reevaluate his cleanliness of his hyd system and make some changes.....

You are either mixing apples and oranges, or using QD's on the suction lines.
If you haven't got it figured out yet, restriction on pressure side of pump are not limited by a 14.7 psi charge pressure.

start make your own experiments by sucking water with a straw. Squezze the straw on one, two three different points? Feel any difference in water supply?

No, I am not mixing anything. We are talking about fittings and hose size, fluid speed, pressure, and the results of each setup. Go ahead and work up some figures for the pressure losses , fluid speed, GPM's increase or decrease and heat produced with different size hose, but keep the hoses short. Can't you see a manufacture with 15 hoses on a piece of equipment with different hose size, changing hoses size with every fitting? NOT.

Thanks for the replies guys!
I built the tank yesterday and used 1" fittings in and out. I can reduce down or go with 1" when i get to that point. The splitter is coming along well.

nutritious healthy hydraulic fast food...reused/recycled old stuff in new packing, spiced up with some humor....like McDonalds...

The guy is Russian (Sergiy Sydorenko) of some sort, and live/work in Portugal, and I think he is trying to make his own version of Brendan Casey's Insidersecrets to hydraluics...which is like Burger King as a comparison, just a slightly fancier, but more boring....

Sergiy sure seems to have more hands on experience than Brendan Casey, and I like his anecdote about (Mr) Hysteresis.
I also think he could have done better on the basics, his "Flow makes it go" theory is not good....

I read the article, And it has not changed my thinking ANY, I use Parker Hanniflin strainers, The one I use for my log splitter, is the external type, and easily serviced, with a gage, I think Parker Hanniflin Is as good as it gets for my money, If you check there web site, all there Hydraulic pump stations come Standard with A... Suction Strainer.... I suppose you could order one with out it, But it would probably void the warrenty, I really dont need Parkers support on the suction strainer issue, But If I did, Id give them more credit then the guy makin jokes about strainers in that article, It really dont matter one way or another to me what other people use or dont use, I am just real happy with my setup, :thumbsup:Thanks Eric
