Add the extra realy as described. Leave all current wires to battery + side of starter(#30 psot) but add another cable from there to the new relay. Disconnect #2 wire from the starter post (#50 on schematic), use this as the activation for new relay and run another cable from relay to stater #50 post. This should leave all switches and warning alarms working as original.

That sounds like a reasonable solution. The terminals on the old relay were pretty corroded, but it's a cheap relay to replace so I'll get one on order. I'll review the specifics of this plan over the next few days. I was going to work on it today, but SWMBO decided we were going to shear the llamas instead.

I changed the wiring around today to impliment the changes. Works perfectly.

I'm still going to replace the harnesses and relays as well as the safety start switch since I know it has issues as well. All the new parts should be in around the end of the week.

Thought I should give an update to this thread...

I received and installed the new harnesses. I had to repin the plug on the engine harness as it was pinned differently than the factory configuration. The new main harness matched perfectly. Since replacing the harnesses and several additional parts (safety start switch, relays, flashers, etc), the tractor now starts and runs like it was brand new. I would consider this project to be a complete success.
I still plan to replace some small two and three wire harnesses which were badly corroded, but that can wait until later. For now, I simply made some temporary harnesses to get by on.

A side note here for those who are interested. The wiring harnesses use large molex pins for the plug connection. I was unable to find the proper size extraction tool for repinning the plug, so I went to a local model train store and bought a piece of brass tubing which was the correct size to fit over the pin and release the latches so that the pins could be removed from the plug. I took the harness with me and simply tried various sizes until I found the right size for what I needed. Worked great and only cost about $1.75.
I'll try to remember to bring one of the old plugs home and get some pix to post.
