I just purchased a 1984 MF 1040 that needed the lower FEL mounts repaired (they were badly cracked) I bought it for a great price as the machine it self is in great shape.

The problem I am having is I cannot shut off the PTO. It appears to be two speeds with no neutral position. Even with the clutch engaged it continues to spin.

There is an electrical switch mounted on the PTO lever, but I unsure of its purpose.

Can anyone tell me what mght be wrong?????

Thank you for your time.

I have a MF1040 and it is only a one speed PTO (540)? The lever is only D-N ? Anyway, the PTO will continue to turn if nothing is attached, but you should be able to stop it with your hand if it is just free wheeling?

I know the wire you are talking about coming off the PTO lever. I think it keeps the engine from starting if the PTO is engaged. On your starting instructions it tells you to have the PTO in neutral.

Thank you Gabeancounter. I must have misunderstood the gentleman I bought the machine from.

Have you had any issue`s getting parts for your machine???

I inherited the tractor from my father. It only has 795 hrs and is a 1986 model. I was not sure how long it had been on the complete filter changes so I just ordered them two days ago. Below is the link to all the filters. 2 air, 1 fuel, 2 hydro, 1 oil. I bought all these filters from Fleet Filter- AWESOME pricing !

I also need a fan belt as mine has plenty of cracks etc. This seems to be easy to find. I know the water pump, alternator and a few other parts are pretty easy, but I am sure most parts are difficult.

I just re-read your original post. You have a FEL? They made a front kit for the 1040 to run a FEL. This was controlled by a "toogle switch" I believe. I have not seen this in person. Are you having problems with the front PTO ? I just assumed the rear PTO. Yours 2WD? Got any pics?

Would love to add a FEL to mine.

My machine is 1984 4wd with about 1500 hours on it. The loader is a MF 216 which is in itself great shape. The saddles that the FEL sits in is another story. I ended up cutting everything off and am in the process of fitting everything back together with new metal.

Thanks for the info on the filters.
