Poll: Your satisfaction with your HST transmission

I've got two Kub HST's... A Grand L (purchased on 2002, now at 1000 hours), and a BX (purchased in 2005, now at 600 hours). The L has been nearly perfect in operation (I'll say 9.5). The BX I'd have to knock back a bit (say 8.5), only because it has a mechanical actuated control for the pedal instead of the servo-operated one as on the L. Doesn't have the same flawless return to neutral action of the larger tractor. Never been a problem, but it requires a bit more attention when you're using it.

No mechanical problems with either unit; they work now exactly as when new. We do our own maintenance... changing the HST fluid is costly but not difficult.

I'd have to give mine a rating of 9.5. Have over 500 hours on my 1620 and have always liked the HST. My tractor has the heel-toe pedal, which many people seem not to like, but I find it very easy to use. When first purchased, I primarily used the tractor for FEL and backhoe work. In the last couple years I've been purchasing and using a greater variety of implements; even took a stab at using my two-bottom plow and disk harrow last year. The HST seemed to work fine. The only comparison I have is a few Ford 8N's and 9N's I've used in the past. I'll stick with the HST!

I have a 07 3940 and I rate it at 9.5. The whine is noticeable but tolerable thus a few tenths off. I use mine for plowing, mowing, clearing, and tilling and it's done everything I've asked of it.

My (4) field tractors are all gear, and I wouldnt want a hydro for field use. For on the lawn, I have one hydro and one gear. These two machines really demonstrate the strengths/weaknesses of both transmission types. They are both the exactly the same hp, but the mower is about 20% wider on the gear tractor. In spite of that narrower mower, I can usually get the lawn cut faster with the hydro because that lets me perfectly match the ground speed to any conditions. The gear is always a little too fast or a little too slow for conditions. This time of year however, when the lawn needs cutting every 3-4 days, I prefer the gear even on the lawn, because it lets me get more of the engine's hp into the grass. Cutting thick spring grass takes a lot of hp. So right now, on a scale of 1-10, for cutting my lawn, the hydro gets a 5 and the gear gets a 7. When the grass slows down in the summer, the hydro gets a 9 and the gear gets a 5. Where a hydro excells, just think of the letter "L" : Lawnmowing, Loader use, and Landscaping.

I will give it a 9.8, I like the control but sometimes I wish I could put a little more power to the ground but realistically when the wheels are spinning more power doesn't help. I do spend a lot of time in the woods in tight quarters, I would hate to be messing with a clutch.

For the record I currently drive an automatic, but I love driving stick and have been toying with the idea of a Mustang with stick for a mid life crisis. Unfortunately I spent my mid life crisis wife credits on a green tractor with a top speed of 13 MPH.

Is there a trannie that has both like a few of the new foreign cars. Is a GHT, glide shift hydrostatic offer more that a straight hydro. I love gears but got hydro's (several) for easy of future use by my wife. Two hydro lawn cutters, john deere Sabre 25hp and e-hydro so she someday may remove snow form the drive. She also wanted and I got her a hydro 60" zero turn.

Well....I see no one has voted a 10 yet. I can kind of see why, since most replies are people with Kubotas,Kiote's,New Hollands, etc. So ....I vote the Deere HST a 10. :D

For my two tractors with the ehydro tranny I would rate them as a 9.5 the smaller X749 I would rate it a 9.0 because the pedals don't feel as good as the ehydro's.
