My Sears DLT 2000 with the 2 cylinder 22HP engine runs great and cuts great but the amp meter goes into the negative when I turn on the blades with the electronic PTO engagement switch on the dash. The PTO engages fine. When not engaged the engine puts out about 13.8 volts but drops way down when blades are engaged.

Any suggestions? I am clueless as to how to fix without continuing to charge the battery after use.

Also, sometimes it is hesitates to turn over when starting but after trying several times it will turn over and start as you would want it to.

Thanks for any help.

Just kind of guessing, you may need a new clutch.
Might have a short causing it to draw more current.

First i would check the wiring and connections from the pto switch
to the clutch, maybe one of them is shorting.

Put a good charge on your battery and test the voltage drop when starting the engine. Ideally, load test it when fully charged. I'm thinking either weak battery or charging system/ voltage regulator problem. I would check those before I started chasing gremlins. Hope Its not the clutch because they're pricey- $175- $300.

Thanks for the replies. I always start out with a fresh charge on the battery. I know the regulator is putting out a positive charge as I have checked that but the loss of battery charge from the use of the clutch seems to be the problem. I will go back and carefully check the wiring from the switch to the PTO clutch and see if I see anything.

A fresh battery charge is easier than the cost and aggravation of changing out the clutch. :(

I would be surprised if it were the clutch. I,m thinking regulator or dirty/corroded connection. Briggs and Kohler have very good troubleshooting guidelines in their service manuals, some of which are downloadable. One thing on the Kohlers, make sure that the regulator is grounded. Also, when testing the output of the regulator, you need to determine both current and voltage output.
