I have been considering getting a MF 2605 2WD, I was curious about this machines capabilities to pull Heavy Red Oak logs 30 in diameter, and larger, and lengths 8ft-30ft depending upon the diameter of the logs, managable by the tractor. I plan on doing tillage work, cultivating, pulling firewood in a dump trailer, or utility trailer. Does anyone know about the lugging power of this model 38hp, how does the 231s do for pulling power. I was also looking at the 2625, but wasn't sure if the 7,000-9,000 dollars extra is necessary, and if I would be content with the 2605, and it's capabilities. Since you own both, where were the 231s limits, that the 2625 can accomplish, the 231 may have struggled with, that a larger tractor was needed thanks. I am not interested in 4wd, or a loader, just a 2wd manual tractor, plow, tiller, etc.. Heavy oak tree's will be about the heaviest thing I foresee me pulling with it, so 30 in diameter to about 36 in diameter wide heavy red oaks, anywhere from 8ft, to 30 feet, depending on the diamete, not a 30ft 30 in diameter though, but red oaks up to 30 ft, probably in the 20 in diameter range, with the largest exceeding 30 in in diameter, those would only be about 8-12ft long, some really big ones can be 48 in diameter, but I would cut them up,this what I plan on pulling. Pulling heavy logs will be the secondary use for this tractor, tillage work, and cultivating, etc is the primary use for this tractor. I understand, I could probably cut the logs to managable weights, and sizes for this tractor, does any believe this tractor will do. A draw back, I seem to have come across with heavier tractors like the 2625, is in wet soil areas, that get stuck up. I live in Southern West Virginia. Yes, very mountainous, and yes very steep in places. I would like travel on Gas well roads, and old logging roads with this tractor. There are plenty of ATV roads, but rarely would I take a tractor on one of those, but it is practical to consider. The 2605 seems to be a versatile tractor like the little grey fergie, any imput is appreciated.

The 2605 is a basic no frills tractor.

To me the pros are : Cheap price

Cons: Drum brakes, no Diff lock.

I don't think the differential lock is a must have. I mean look at the little grey fergie TE20, that tractor did not have no differential lock. It is was probably one of the most useful, versatile tractors in history..It is gets the job done to this very day.. I believe the 2605 is basically the 2011 little red fergie

On a 2wd tractor, a Dif lock is more handy than a shirt pocket. It's a must-have in my book, espeically on a 2wd.

You know, in all honesty, I have to disagree. I've had my 231 for 4 years and have pulled numerous things that was really heavy. I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've used the diff lock. Mainly when I was in mud fixing to get stuck. Yes, it helped a couple times, but sometimes when I engaged it, I was stuck already because it was too late.

Diff lock can help you get out, or make it sink worse....Just like 4WD. :)

Despite what you think, you can never have too much traction. Lack of traction is what gets you stuck!
