Ford V10 vs Ford Diesel

Yes, there is a $4,094 savings in fuel but there was a $7,000 difference in purchase price upfront for the diesel truck.
The diesel was only a $4500 option over the V10 when I was last looking for company trucks and $7500 over the V8. In the end, the point of comparing pricing of a V10 to a diesel as a new truck option is moot since Ford no longer even sells the V10 in a pickup truck and used it seems like people try getting the same price for a V10 truck as the equivalent diesel.

You are still paying less every week at the pump AND will pay less overall AND will probably get more in resale when you sell it. Bio-diesel is also cheaper around here than 87 octane.

I have been driving a V10 SuperDuty since 1998 and can say nothing but great things about them. I can change the oil for about 30 bucks, an annual fuel filter is about 12 bucks and the K&N air filter is easy to clean once a year.

I only put about 10k miles per year so that adds up to about 100 bucks per year for maintenance. That is pretty cheap. I did change the tranny fluid at 30k but that was pretty easy too. I just drained the pan and replaced the external spin on filter. Took about 8 quarts. I am getting close to 50k on my truck now and will flush and fill the cooling system. All in all, pretty easy and cheap to do.

Haven't had a truck long enough to mess with the plugs yet. I'm not looking forward to it, but when / if the time comes I'll just dedicate a Saturday afternoon and get it done.

I am running an aftermarket programmer from 5 Star and the thing is incredible. It removes the factory torque limiting strategy and really wakes up the drive by wire technology. MPG is better too. In mixed driving I can easily get 12-13 and unloaded on the highway I can get 14 if I keep it under 75 mph. It will use some gas when you load it down but for me that is a small percentage of the time. And with the relatively low miles per year I am not spending a fortune on gas.

Every situation is different but unless you put quite a few miles per year, or are towing 90 percent of the time, the diesel will not be a good choice. For me, the breakeven point was way beyond 10 years of ownership. I have never kept a vehicle that long.

Not sure what the difference was at the end of the V-10 run but when I priced out my 2006 F-350 I think the Diesel was $7,000 over the base 5.4L V8 and the V-10 was only like $600 over the base V-8. Going with the V-10 was a no brainier if you were not going to buy the diesel.

Yep, that was about right costwise. The V10 was a great solution for those who needed the grunt of a diesel but only infrequently. Everyone who has them, loves them (other than at fuel-up time). Gas engines are much cheaper to buy and maintain, and seem to not complain about being driven infrequently whereas modern diesels are the opposite, from all credible accounts.

Everything is a compromise, and this choice is no different. If you need the towing capacity all the time, get a diesel. If you need it rarely then a gas engine is probably a better choice (and the V10 was the Baddest Dude of that batch).

My question is, can a V-10 get 19 - 21 mpg on highway driving. Alot of people make long trips, so Diesels would be better, But you did say in your case a V-10 would be better for what you do, aleast you did the math and did what was better for you, not everyone will do that, Like these diesel trucks with all the high HP electronics and etc. and never had a trailer on them, I guess some people have more money than sense, but thats there choice.

Hate to say this ToyFarm, but it sounds like you are getting hosed on
your parts purchases. Can't say for sure what an injector pump or injectors
cost in your area but in the south the are less than half that usually.

As far as the starter, any local rebuilder probably sells the it for between 150-200.
Be wary of auto parts brands, most remans are coming from Mexico and new is
from China. Much of it is pure junk, just served with either taco or soy sauce.

Yep, i get hosed every time I buy parts for a diesel, as the nearest shop to me is atleast 60 miles away! Those prices included labor, with the exception of routine service! But by the time i take anything to a diesel shop, I already have half day invested in dropping it off and getting a ride back! Whenever they call and say oh that'll be another 200.00 or 1500.00 or whatever, I really am at there mercy and since i need whatever truck is being repaired, repair cost is generally less than i'm losing by not having it!

You bring up another good reason why i'm really happy with the new V10.
Problems arise with all vehicles, but atleast with the gasser, if i'm not smart enough to figure it out, i can take it to any of the local shops and i'm confident it would be fixed in a hurry! Same goes for parts...most any parts store in town will stock alot of parts for the gasser.

I am with him. Just bought my v10. Only plan on driving it 10K or less a year, will pull anything I want, and will never buy another truck this big. I like the v10's

I've had my super D f-250 for 12 years, with a v-10 rebuilt the transmission at 135-k engine still running strong now at 159-k miles, only engine trouble was around 30-k miles had to replace a coil pack,
I purchased this truck for towing, and you can bet every time it leave my driveway it has one of my trailers hooked to it,;) although I recently sold the largest of our trailer,(our camper), the V-10 gets 11-12 mpg towing, been thinking of getting a 4 banger truck while gas prices are as high as is, I'll of course keep my-ol Super-duty ;)
