That's fine, Jeff. But keep in mind that the Wagner is "good", too; just noisy and a lot of vibration.

I don't think you will ever get away from the brush if you want good spread and penetration of the stain. I suggest renting or buying a good airless sprayer that has a hose or intake that sits directly inside the bucket. I have a Wagner Paint Crew machine that works okay for stain, but it would be much nicer to have a higher level machine. The Paint Crew costs about $200 new.

I suggest buying a horsehair or other fine bristle radiator brush. Even a horsehair pushbroom works well for spreading stain after you spray it on. The brush just helps get the stain down into the grain of the wood. The big push broom makes brushing quick and easy. I even use one when I stain the siding on my house. You aren't looking for a fine paint finish, just working the stain down into the grain of the wood.

X2 off ebay for $135. and change

When I stained my deck, I remember reading somewhere, maybe on the label of the stain, that spraying wasn't the recommended application. As I recall, they recommended a brush or roller as the best way to get more even coverage.

I sprayed it with my paint gun and air compressor anyway.

How much fence do you have to stain anyway?

Yep, for more even coverage, to prevent runs, etc. some of the labels recommend a brush, too, even if you are spraying. And of course lots of folks (who probably know more than I) think a brush pushes paint and/or stains into the grain better than spraying. But it just always seemed to me that a finely atomized spray would get into cracks and crevices that a brush couldn't get to.

The sprayer seemed to force it into the wood, but I had some nonuniform spots. However, the job was done more quickly than I could have done it by hand.

The owner's manual for the Wagner "Optimus Plus" sprayer says "the stain tip has a specially designed opening for use with thin materials such as thin stains, sealers and waterproofers....If you did not receive a stain tip...the tip can be purchased at your local retailer."

My impression is you'd have to buy the stain tip, too. That still doesn't answer your original question of how it well it would spray stain. Wagner's technical services telephone no. is 800-328-8251. You might call them and ask which product they'd recommend for the job to see what they say.
