Yep. I think you are correct on some of the larger units.

I am still working on a modification for the parking brake lever on my PT425. It is too hard to engage and disengage. I have a parking brake foot lever from a 2000 Impala that I want to modify. However, I am waiting for funds to purchase a MIG welder.

On the parking brake thing. When you activate the parking brake, the plunger is supposed to contact the disc and catch on the next rotating notch. If you take the plunger and spring out and clean it and lube, it will snap right into the next notch of the brake disc if going slow.

I would prefer to have the spring activated brake, as it will activate if you lose hyd pressure. I had an accident where the hyd wheel motor hose burst and I was rolling backward to a creek. I could not think fast enough to activate the brakes, or drop the bucket. I was trying to figure out the problem, while rolling backward. A tree stopped the PT from rolling into the creek and saved the day.

My problem isn't the pin and slot. The problem is the handle. If I make it loose enough to operate without straining my arm, it will not stay disengaged. If I tighten it up enough to stay disengaged, I have trouble setting and releasing it. It is just not a well designed handle. It is really about the only thing I dislike on the tractor.

Moss, I know you have seen this before, but here it is again. I have been using this for several years and it works great. I loosed the friction nut, so that problem is gone. It is self latching from gravity. It can be easily released with one hand. Very simple to make. It is made of that plastic/wood decking board.

Honestly, I do not remember that at all. Very simple. Very elegant. :thumbsup:

Just to clarify a small, but important issue.

The new 1445s have automatic brakes. These were an absolute must for me for the use of tractors on slopes. They function like semi-truck brakes; hydraulic pressure releases the brakes, so a stall or broken hose will cause the brakes to come on automatically.

An electrically controlled solenoid dumps pressure from the brake system to function as a parking brake.

If you live long enough, you'll have stories like JJ's. I try to plan on not "lucking out" and having a tree save the day. (Though I am definitely the beneficiary of other trees; hence, my insistence on the automatic brakes.)

I had difficulty getting both parking brakes to engage or disengage without turning the steering wheel and messing around!

So I just disconnected one brake cable. The remaining one wheel parking brake is more than adequate to keep the PT-425 from rolling off when parked, and slides in and out much more easily!

Never try to engage the parking brake when the PT is moving! You are almost sure to either not be able to engage it, or engage it and break something! (That's break, not brake!!)

Usually just turning the wheels sharply to the left or right will be adequate when parking!

I had to temporarily disable one brake when the cable broke. I found that it would slide on steeper slopes if it was the least bit slippery. The same spots were fine when I got them both working again. There are times when I wish mine had 4 wheel brakes, like when drilling post holes on slopes. It's easy to lift the front wheels and start rolling downhill.
