to the hospital and avoid issues involving alignment
and bearing preloading loading required for the assembly
of the halves.;)

Well I can answer my own question. I'm in big trouble.

The whole bearing in the rear that held the back end of the PTO shaft is gone. Where it all went and the damage it caused is subject to lots of speculation. Dealer says 4-6k is their estimate, could be lower but they wont know until they inspect the gears and there is the question if metal got into the HST. I pick up the shop manuel on Friday and will speak to the mechanics. I don't think I have a choice but to do the work myself. I might have them help me inspect the parts for damage. They seem willing to help me through the work myself.

First order of business to to dissect the HST oil filter and see what it picked up.

Parts in canada seem about 25% higher even though our dollar is higher so I may be getting may parts from the US.

if out of warranty.. the rear of a salvage unit with front ed damage may be an idea.. places like wengers could put that on a pallate and freight it out.. etc.

Called Wengers, They have never had a BX23,24 or 25 as a salavage unit. If anyone know's of a lead for one please let me know. This could be an option if the gears are damaged.

Ouch...

I would initially spend some web time scouring the "world" for used backhalf...might get lucky. Simultaneously disassemble to assess damage...have to assume metal inside, but may not have migrated. Worst-case...part-out and buy another tractor...

Did the dealer give a reason on how this could happen?

Nope but that transmission case part has been obsolete three times and it will be interesting to see if there is more meat in the bearing holder. The bearing holder cracked and or the bearing failed. The damage continued as I used it without knowing this happened. Dealer is adamant that the shear pin on the PTO shaft is sized properly for my small tractor.

The tractor has less then 200hours and is 4 years old. I'm not going to part it out. I'll fix it with new Kubota parts and she will be as good as new. Just a question how long it's going to take me and how many tries to get it right.

But I got to tell you this is the last Kubota product I will ever own.

Also, a few Kubota owners have been able to get some finical support from the Regional Sales manager especially if they can prove it is a know problem. See if you can find out if any service bulletins have been issued for that problem. Did you keep records of the service you did or the dealer? Having them will help your case out. I am not sure how CA works though.

I'm going to talk to the owner of my dealership on Friday when I pick up the WSM. I'll keep that in mind and ask to see if he will get me in touch with his Kubota rep. I've also learned that the bearing that failed has been obsolete and replaced with a different one. I'd like to think that the new one is better but in the the global economy it could be just because they could get a better price from a new supplier.

Only good news of the day is I found a dealer in the US that will discount the parts I'll need. I'll keep this thread updated with the repair.

good luck to the OP who is looking for them parts.

call a bunch of salvage yards and other dealers that might have wrecks in t he back of their lot.

I understand your sentiment...pursue reason for bearing update. May lead somewhere other than simply sourcing...if so...

If problem related to aluminum housing...other makes use them in that tractor class as well. I know I thought about liberal use of aluminum and strength, but SCUT what I needed...

I understand your sentiment too and I'm not holding up for Kubota as I definitely don't bleed Orange but you hit something and the shear pin sheared but maybe it didn't shear quick enough and that's what took out the housing. I've seen a lot stuff break in the last 25 years as my wife and her Dad ran a Dairy up until '03, like they say stuff happens. I wasn't allowed to run any of my FIL's equipment but when something broke I usually the first one called as I've worked as a Machinist nearly my entire career. I've seen gears break on 100+hp tractors, someone else fixed that one, I've seen silo unloaders froze in place in the winter and break things when fired up. I guess what I'm tryng to say is things are going to break once in a while no matter what brand it is especially when you hit unseen objects. The first thing I look for when something like that breaks is fracture lines that may have been present before the catastrophic failure, they usually always show up as a slightly different color than a fresh break. Sometimes a little investigation goes a long way in figuring out what happened.

If it's just the bearing carrier that's missing, it can be fixed/fabricated. If it were anything other than Al you would be sol.

These guys have done work for me, and they are very reasonable.

Dunno about Kubota, but the JD 2305 and the 2210 are known for the same thing.

I have reason to be in the local highway department repair garage from time to time, and this winter I saw a BX being torn apart & rear axle being disected. Being a fairly new owner of a BX24, I had to walk over & ask the mechanic what was the issue. As I recall, he had a story very similar to yours, except that he assumed that there was abuse from the operator. Now I am not so sure that was the case...

I recall someone replacing the whole HST because it burned out or something like that. It was only 2 or 3 months ago I thought. It was on a BX but not a BX24. Cant find the thread. He was going to rebuild but replacing was cheaper if I remember right.
