The wiring has been rewired a couple of times on this tractor (Once by me trying to reconnect and get everthing working again; 90% sucess)

The question is does your green charge light on the dash always stay on? Or does this indicate trouble with the alternator?

Tractor is located in a remote location from home, new battery and I am avoiding using the lights ... I havnt had a voltage meter on the battery yet, seems good. Any suggestions on an easy way to test the alternator to see that its charging properly?

Gas or diesel? If it's gas or has an electric fuel shut off it should die if you pull one of the terminals off the battery and the alternator's not working.

The best way, of course, is to just take a meter with you next time you're up with the tractor and check it. Should be around 14 volts if it's a 12 volt system.

Not to steal the thread: The charge light on my 4220D has a slight glow all the time that is only visible in dim light or dark. It has been that way for a couple years but the battery stays charged so I never messed with finding out why. Any ideas on that?

thats just a leaking diode in the alternator,dont mess with it if it aint broke i say ;)

Normally, the light comes on when the voltage from the alternator is less than the battery voltage. My system has the mechanical voltage regulator. The light would flicker occasionally or come on at low engine rpm. Checked it with a voltmeter and it was reading 12.4 volts. Replaced the alternator and the light stays off and it now puts out 14.2 volts.

If the light is barely glowing until the RPMs are higher = your fan belt is loose.

If the light is always on = 90% of the time its the voltage regulator, its gone to heaven:D

ok thanks for the posts ...

its diesel; yes I will take my volt meter this time (must put in the "to go" pile ...)

Hummm! ... so green light should be off? unless theres a problem, or low rpm's; problem pointing to the voltage regulator 90% of the time;

ok thanks;:thumbsup:

Next newbie question would be where is the voltage regulator located???:confused2:

:p

Pointers appreciated.

Cheers BC Dave

I checked the battery after sitting idle for 3 weeks it read 12.4 with the neg terminal removed, that would seem fully charged to me; no problem-o starting :thumbsup:. Green light still on; I meant to check voltage while running to see if it hit 14V; but I was busy and it was rainy and I remembered on the way home .... grrrr
