Middle Buster for digging up sapling roots??

I have a kubota 6100 2wd that the previous owner upgraded to a 21 horse engine.

I would be a little concerned about putting too much stress on your drive train with that 21 hp engine, since that drive train was originally intended for a 14hp (12hp pto) engine.

Also, you mentioned in another thread that you were experiencing a loud noise in your 3pt hydraulic system.
If you use a middle buster or subsoiler, you will no doubt be having to go around each stump to break the roots, and constantly raising & lowering the implement. Thus putting more stress on a system that may be hurting, already.

Unless you can afford to hire someone to take the stumps out, in your situation I think you would be better off doing as Baby Grand said in just mowing off the new tender growth that will come up from the stumps until it eventually dies and rots. Or you could simply spray brush killer on the stumps so they will die sooner. :)

I have to say that this is by far the most helpful forum on the web, on any topic.

I have decided that this spring/summer I am just going to clean up and mow down any new growth. In the fall or perhaps next spring I will hopefully price out a dozer and operator to rake out the roots it and smooth any ruts. I live in a flat area of NJ completely devoid of rocks so this should not be an overwhelming chore for a decent operator. Is there any advantage to doing this in the fall versus the spring?

On a side note I finally got the tractor starting and running like a top. The last guy replaced the 14 or 16hp diesel with a 21hp gas. Thats a wash I guess. I can not recommend Engine Distributers (Powerful Engines and Industrial Engines ? Engine Distributors Offers Reliable Engines from Ford, Deutz, Kubota, and Crusader) enough for help getting that engine running, and for great prices on their parts.

I was wondering if instead of a Dozer you could check for a neighbor or friend with a larger tractor with a Front End Loader, most of what you described I could pop out with my FEL on my 36 horse tractor, It would tear up the ground less, compact it less and cost a bunch less to operate all day, than a dozer. Or maybe you could rent one and have the fun yourself, Just thinking out loud, but to me a dozer sounds like a bit much. Or maybe I dont understand the size of the stumps or the ground they are stuck in. but I scrape off little stuff that a rotary cutter will cut, and never even slow down, just feather the bucket edge just at the top of the ground so it hooks on them and they pop out! Good luck on what ever you decide.

Not sure if I agree about the dozer compacting the ground more than a tractor, the opposite may be true. I agree a larger tractor could do the job but this job is a good application for a small dozer the size of a Deere 450 or 550 would be a good choice. I would guess this would be a $500 to $1000 job, just depends on how far away and how busy the guys are.
