dell optiplex memory

at work we are clearing out some older pc's

one is a dell optiplex G series.. can't remember the actual number but it is a pentium 4, 256m ram, and winxp

I can get it for free.. which would be nice as I only have a netbook computer since my other cpu took a dump a while back.. and this lil screen is hard to see good pics and type on..

I'd like to bump the memory in it.. I believe it has 2 slots.. currently with 128mb modules in them. since it's obviously probably 4ys old and on xp i'm guessing it can only address 2g of ram. called around and 1g ram chips are pretty cheap.. but I don't know if it is ddr or ddr2 .. not that I'm vary familiar with the difference.. but I have heard the lil slot in the bottom of the cip is something like 1 notch off on either?

couple places even have used ram.. and I can get 2g for pratically free.. especially if it is the older ddr and not ddr2

anyone know which it is? soemthing like pc 3200 and ddr? which is what I'm thinking.

Crucial can either scan the computer or they have an adviser which tells which kind of memory the common configurations had. Check them out I would not buy from them they are a little expensive but will give you an idea what kind to look for.

Pull a bank of ram and run the long number in google, this should give you a site with the ram specs.

Option two, should be an Express Tag number from dell on the side or rear of the puter. Go to dell support on line and enter the tag number, this will tell you all factory installed hardware on 'that' machine.

Crucial and some other retailers (Newegg?) will give you the OEM configuration if you drill down far enough in their selection process. I buy Dell machines for most of our needs, usually 2-4 years old. I google "Dell Optiplex 755 specifications" and always find a page like this

On this page I always find the OEM info....DDR2 in the case of the 755. I know this has worked for me for at least two other Dell models. Good luck.

the GX-series depending on which model? uses PC-2 or DDR-2
I have a- Gx-620 uses the PC-2 3200
I also have an older Gx 280 uses DDR-2

Any of the GX series makes a good work-horse of a computer,
the processor/CPU speed is more important than the ram..
if it has 2.00 Ghz or higher it will do fine and increasing the ram will have it performing a little better, thinking of one with factory supply of 256 ram, then it must be an older series GX 9 or 10 years old and might have more like 1.60 ghz/ etc,etc, getting it free is good but I wouldn't sink a lot of cash into it by it having the slower processor,

I go to Newegg.com for the info. They have a good memory lookup section. RAM can make a huge difference, 256meg is not enough nowadays. Websites have so much content and flash that a gig is pretty much the minimum unless you don't mind waiting or have dial-up

thanks guys. I looked up the spec sheet from dell.

it's a DDR machine.

and unfortunately only holds 1 gig, IE.. 2 512mb chips.

oh well.. still bettern nuttin.

A bit late coming to this thread, but such an older desktop is probably not as much a memory hog as the newer ones that use Vista as an OS. My first "real" desktop was a Dell 2400, it ran XP fairly well on only 256 mb, this was using dial up in 2004. Bumping it up with another 256 mb made a fair difference in speed. When I was working full time, the majority of our desktops were the Optiflex. Reliable, all purpose machines. I'd love to get one for free.

well, i got it for free.. it has 2 128 chips in it. IF i could find 2 512 chips for it I would.

I do have a 1g and a 512 chip in another machine a HP I just fixed. it had a bad video card on the mother board. i finally got an older pci card for it and got it up and running too this weekend... I could drop another 1g chip in it, and xfer it's 512 chip to the optiplex, figing it 640 vs the 256.. then both machines would be happy.. and I'd have a lil better home pc / scrfeen to work on..
