I was give a pallet of auger bits that I want to sell but don't know what they were designed for, so not sure who might be interested in them. I have twelve of them, each is 4' long x 14" in diameter with a 1 1/2" round shaft. They have been sitting outside and are rusty but I don't see any thinning of the metal or other problems. If anyone can tell me something about them and what they might be worth I would appreciate the info. thanks.

Dang Nice Find...

A guess would be they could be used with a 3pt Post Hole Drill Head for drilling shallow water wells. 12 inch casings would be awesome to have, sure wish they were in my yard, they would get put to use or at least given a try.

I would say the value is in finding someone who might want them.

What State is your location?

Good Luck and Do Not Scrap Them!!!

thats not a bunch of short bits that looks like a long bit (or two) in multiple pieces. Looks like it is something that would be used to sink telephone or power poles. I suppose you could easily retro it to be a 3pt auger as well. good luck

Those look like conveyor flights to me. We used that kind of conveyor in the brewery to move spent grains to the truck loading dock. The screw flights lay in a U shaped trough, and are driven by a gear reducer from the end.

Great reply, thanks for the accurate description.

I do like daydreaming though, having add-on sections for a 3pt Auger for going deeper would be neat, but probably mechanically restrictive. I guess it would already have been done or washing with drill mud is much more efficient. I need to put in 10 plus shallow water wells and looking everywhere for my best options to do so.

"pabble" Good Luck finding a use or finding someone that can put them to use as conveyor flights like "638" pointed out, moving volumes of grain or similar bulk materials.

I'm going with well drilling cause if you zoom in on all 3 pic, I dont see any where for bearing suports that would keep the screw supported. A screw conveyor would require hanger supports so the conveoyer trough would not get worn out by the rubbing of the screw.

You need to look for a used Bucyrus Erie Cable Tool Drill Rig to drill your water wells in the National Driller Magazine, there are lots of good used cable tool drill rigs for sale.

The other nasty thing about shallow wells is this; the water that is close to the surface has a lot of leaching from heavy metals in the soil and water table near the surface.

These type of augers require huge amounts of torque and the only type of rig that can offer that amount of torque is a pole digging drill head with a hydraulic driven planetary drive gearbox drill head and drilling boom.

I believe
They are from an agriculture application!
I have seen them used in a concrete or steel trough to manure or grain.

You can see what looks like green paint. I'd go with Deere grain elevator.

I'm with 638 on this, I'd bet they are part of a slow speed auger conveyor system.

I really doubt they were ever used to drill holes /wells. They are light gauge flights and I see no damage to the edges that you would expect to get if used to dig a hole in the ground. Gauge that light should have a few bent over spots from hitting the odd earth knot. Also, the flight edges don't have that folded over look earth augers have...they actually look to have fairly square edges.

Maybe it's just me, but they don't appear to be identical with each other...
