Might as well get all the discussion in one thread.

I've always been told that the weld is always stronger than the base metal and if something is going to break, it's going to be the metal beside the weld rather than the weld. This tells me that what I've been told is a bunch of hooie.

Not really!
These break tests put the weld at a horrible disadvantage. Think leverage, and only leverage. There is more to welding than running a bead. Now think joint prep. ;)

Haywire you seem to think I'm a better weldor than you, here do this test for yourself. Look at this picture, but turn the plate around, and hit it on the side that the weld is on. I guarantee you'll need a bigger hammer!:thumbsup:

The original break occurred at the weakest point. If it is properly welded it should break at the weld.:thumbsup:

LOL... You welded bridges for a career and I've got 3 months piddling with scrap metal in the barn. If you aren't a better welder than me, I'm going to start avoiding bridges from now on. :laughing:
