I've been wanting to look at and drive a 1643/1648 series for several months. I've been to the three closest Massey dealers and none have any tractors in stock. It's almost like the nicest compact tractor that cannot be had. All are willing to order one but I'd like to actually see one before commiting to take one.

The title of your thread is "Hard Times".

I don't think it's so much a matter of hard times, as it is that the dealer usually stocks what he thinks he can sell.

If in 'ag' country, with large farms.........you'll find the dealers stocking mainly large tractors, with a few GC series (because the farmers buy these for mowing lawns).

My dealer just started stocking the GC series(with FELS), because there is 'now' a market for them in my area(and that is a result of MTD junk).

Have you asked your local dealers if they have sold one? Maybe you can contact that person and look at theirs?

According to the Massey website there are 7 dealers within 75 miles of you. Check with the other 4 dealers for stock.

Availibility of dealers isn't the issue. There are three dealers within 40 miles of me. None have tractors. That a little concerning when it seems that the 1600 series is a good product.

My observation is that people are leaving the urban area's by the tens of thousands. Those that can are leaving. Whole families are making contingency plans on small acres all over rural America. Small acreages and small farms are growing and with the uncertain future of America and our way of life and the coming economy collapse people are bunkering in by the thousands, getting off the grid and becoming self sufficient for a whole bunch of reasons. All those small operations require a compact tractor and thy are selling like hotcakes, and it's going to continue. Any small tractor dealer that can't make it in this market is doing something wrong. For every property that is divided up that bought crop row tractors the dealer will now sell 25 compacts to the new small guys on the smaller acres. This is good times for tractor dealers, that's why there are so many choices and models to choose from.
