Greetings. I have a Yanmar YM-2210D with a brush hog. My property has 4 acres of wild grasses that I keep mowed down for fire control. We also have many scrub oak stumps that raise havoc with my JD L130 mower. The Brush hog is over kill and really doesn't do a very nice cut. Can someone suggest a very sturdy finish mower for the tractor that will give a better cut, but will take the stumps in stride? There are too many stumps to dig up, and they can really beat up the rotary blades on the L130. I am in Colorado, between Denver and Colorado Springs, up against the front range.

Sounds to me like the brush hog is what you need. I have an old FMC 5' cutter and with sharp blades it will give a pretty clean cut. I also have a Woods RD60 finish mower. It has a 7 gauge frame but I would not want to use it on stumpy ground. They are just not made for that. I know that is not the answer you were looking for but that is my opinion and it is free. :D

Thanks. I am leaning your way, just thought I would see if anyone had a good idea. Have a great Independence Day.

If the stumps are <2" then almost any older finish mower should work. Set it low for the first cut to trim the stumps, and then raise it an inch. Over time the stumps will decay anyway, so the first cut is the only one to be problematic. An older King Kutter or Brush Hog should do just fine for stumps of that size.

Are these living stumps or old stumps that are rotting from trees that were cut down? If there like living hardwoods that keep sprouting back into amall trees spray them with herbicide like glyphosate and kill them and they will rot in a year and not be a problem. I am reclaiming my fields and i had to do this very thing to get the stumps out. They are rotting this year.

Like winston I think a reasonably sharp set of blades are just fine on a RC mower or not dull works too at the right ground speed.

I have a good 2 acres of front lawn at my shop and my wife's 50" 3 blade garden tractor doesn't do that much better than my old Howse 5' RC with really dull blades.

She can drive under the trees and I leave that for her but other than that my tractor does a real decent job with the bush hog I think anyway plus I get to do some tractoring.

Thanks. I think I just need more practice with the brush hog. I have the 5ft Howse as well. If I am not careful in adjusting it, it becomes a good plow.

I don't even want to tell you what I almost ran into while twisted around looking at the mower.

You are right on the edge with a 5' hog. I pull a 4' with the trans in 2 and the shuttle in 3 most of the time. It took a few times mowing to get the tail wheel just right and with a couple of pieces of strap steel I made a floating top mount. The cut I get is as nice as my flail. Just tinker with the adjustment and speed and you should get good results. May also want to look at the condition of the blades.
