Road fatalities have turned into one of the biggest 'killers' in modern society. One of the biggest reasons for road mishaps is 'speed'. So, the simplest solution is to slow down speed. The speed associated limitations are imposed on drivers for safety concerns. So, it is their duty to pay attention to speed signs and even restrict the speed to ten k/h under what sign says.

1. The basic rule is to 'slow down' to take corner successfully. Weather condition is another area that you need to give special attention.

2. Alcohol is another major reason for road mishaps. It is human nature to believe that they know what they are doing, particularly when they are drinking.

3. A simple rule to keep in mind for driving safely is common civility. If one allows others to go ahead, one can save various probable troubles on the road from happening.

The newest danger is cell phones and texting. Talking on a cell phone while driving is the same as driving drunk. Texting is equivalent to driving drunk and blindfolded.

Out here in the country we use to come up on someone poking along 20 miles under the speed limit and write it off as some older person going shopping or some farmer going to town. It wasn't much of a problem cause hey, we moved to the country because we wanted the slower pace of life. Now that person driving 20 miles under the limit is someone on a cell phone and if they're texting you need to turn off that road and get away from them ASAP.

Lets see, vehicle deaths continue to drop year after year.

Police and pilots use radios and computers while driving or flying all the time, why can't we talk on cell phone and text?

Slow down; sure, you are always safer going slow, but their is an unseen cost to going slow that most people don't think is worth it as evidenced by their actions.

Alcohol? Sure, no other drug affect the coordination while at the same time often giving the person the desire to go fast and the feeling that nothing can go wrong. But when something does go wrong they are usually the ones who primarily pay for it. It is not until blood alcohol levels get to about twice the current legal limits before severe accident occur. This is a price of freedom. See below many of the other freedoms we have that may also have costs

My driving tips? When you are not able to focus on driving as much as you were due to talking on the phone/radio, looking at pretty women, checking out the map, getting your kids to behave, eating a burger, thinking about you new girlfriend or your soon to be ex wife or whatever; increase your following distance and decrease your speed if necessary.

Be responsible for you actions behind the wheel.

How long will it take a moderator to delete this post? Lets see. So much for a forum for discussions.

I think it is funny, here in NY it is illegal to drive while using a phone (unless you have a handsfree setup), but most of the time when I see a cop, they are holding a phone up to their ear.

Going slow is ONLY safer if EVERYONE goes slow. Try going 5 under on the interstate when everyone is doing at least 10 over.
Unless the weather forces a slower speed, you are more of hazard to others when you go slower than the flow of traffic as the other drivers have to merge around you

What a strange concept :D, increasing your following distance when you do things that cause you to have a longer reaction time.

I'll let the police talk about their occupation but as a retired airline pilot I will address how professional pilot's use the radios and flight management systems (computers) in the cockpit. In visual conditions the PF (pilot flying) looks out the windows at all times with only quick scans of the instrument panel. The PNF (pilot not flying) talks on the radio, programs the flight management system (auto pilot) makes the announcements, etc. Most pilots I flew with used boom mikes so that on the rare occasion they did talk on the radio when they were the PF they didn't have to pick up a mike to do it. All they needed to do was press the mike button on the control yoke. Besides that, aircraft are separatated horizontally by miles rather than inches.

And I hope they taught you like I was that no matter what else is going on, FLY THE PLANE. I always took that to mean no talking, no texting, no swatting at a bee if it interfered with the prime task. Same principle in a car . . . or a tractor.
