Since I dont have a manual for the 454....Wanted to know what is the correct operation for engaging and disengaging the PTO? Also, the handle on the left side of the seat, which position is for 540 RPM and for 1000 RPM?

Thanks...

do you have a double clutch? Which means push clutch half way for regular gears 1-4, etc and then push further for pto engagement 540 upwards and 1000 downwards then let out clutch. That is the way mine is set up.

My pto is next to the seat as well, i have a foton 404. Hope that helps

Push down for 540. Pull up for the other speed, not sure if it's 720 or 1000 - I never used it. But when you have a mower on, you'll know right away if you've selected the wrong PTO speed. If the higher speed is inadvertently selected, the sound coming from behind you will more resemble a helicopter than a mower.

The PTO is temporarily disengaged when the lever is being moved between 540 and 720/1000. Whereas it technically not a neutral position, I used it as such. So when I wasn't using a PTO implement, I parked that lever in the middle. Engaging the PTO then was a simple matter of fully depressing the clutch pedal then pushing down on the lever. On a properly adjusted clutch, by the time your foot's halfway through the upward pedal travel - the PTO is fully engaged.

Greg is right. You should also feel a little more resistance as the clutch pedal enters the range where it controls the PTO.

It is best to have the engine at low RPM when engaging a PTO powered implement and like Greg said you can do a visual comparison of speeds just to make sure.

My Kama 554 is 540/720. 720 is up 540 is down.

I usually use the 720 position with the engine RPM set lower to give me 540 as most implements don't neeed all the power the higher engine RPM gives. This allows me to save wear and tear on the engine.

You could not be more wrong. Running at less than the specified PTO speed will lug the engine and cause more wear, especially on the bottom end.

Plain and simple, diesel engines like to be ran at a constant RPM. Many many engines out there are ran for days or weeks or even more in industrial applications, marine, pump, ect.

Its your tractor so do as you want but I can tell you for a fact that you are taking life off it doing it this way plus burning more fuel in the long run. Use your gearing to adjust your ground speed on a tractor, not the throttle.

A little research will validate my points or just ask any real farmer.

Dead wrong on both counts. PTO driven implements are engineered to work most efficiently at the specified PTO input speed. Same with tractors. Failure to comply with both tractor and implement manufacturer operating instructions/recommendations CAN AND WILL accelerate wear and tear on the engine.

Excellent. I traded my KM454 several months back, but I've still got quite a pile of spare parts if you're ever in need.
