I have an old dump cart my Dad gave me; it's in fine shape structurally but is faded and pretty rusty.

I thought I would strip it down and tgen prime, repaint it for fun. I've never done anything like this so looking for input, especially on how best to get the cart down to bare surface again. Thanks.

I use naval jelly on things that big. Brush it on and leave it for awhile, rinse it off and use rustoleum. If it's pitted bad and you care, you'll have to do some kind of sanding or bondo.

When you wash off the naval jelly can you just wash it off onto the ground or do you have to contain it somehow?

I do it in the driveway, it's phosphoric acid and not that harsh and it gets diluted. You could add something like soda or lime to neutralize it if you want to. You can also leave it on until it dries, then rinse it off immediately before you plan to paint. That helps prevent the rust process from starting right away before you can get painting.
