So, have the TV weather forecasters stopped calling it a "beautiful day" yet? It always irritates me when they use hot weather as a synonym for good weather.

Got the new fan motor on the A/C, they wanted $350 + parts to do it!!! I got it myself and did it for $148 + travel and time.
First fan motor to ever go out on me in 48 years. Counting various rentals and my own homes that had quite a few older units, this sucked since the motor was in a new unit I bought 27 months ago, go figure. 1 year warranty!
Anyway getting cold air now, this morning wasn't as bad as yesterdays (temp), thank goodness.

Dennis, we bought a new Fox & Jacobs house in 1972 that had Carrier A/C. The manual said the motors needed no lubrication. Why the manuals said that I'll never know because both the blower motor for the air handler and the motor for the fan in the outside unit had a place to add oil. Anyway, the inside blower motor died after 3 years and I replaced it myself. We bought another new F&J home in 1977 with the same kind of A/C. On that one, I oiled both motors annually and after more than 11 years, when we sold the place, they were still working normally.

Dennis, is it possible the squirrel cage has balance issues? I would think you had a faulty motor or some bad imbalance that destroyed the motor's bearings. I'd call 27 months on a fan motor "infant mortality" for sure. My AC on a previous house had an outside condenser fan go after about 18 years, but the inside evaporator fan was still working perfectly after 27 years use. It was a gas furnace also, so it ran during the winter. I never lubed the motor at all and it just kept running. It was a Lennox unit that had been installed new a couple of years before I bought the house in 1982.

Dennis, I hope you didn't start a run of back luck for others.:laughing: Our youngest daughter and her husband got back Saturday evening from a 2 week vacation in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy and learned that one of their air-conditioners went out while they were gone. They have two central air units; one for downstairs and one for upstairs. Son-in-law thinks it's the blower motor for the upstairs unit, but has already called an HVAC company to come see what it is. The house is only about 4 years old, so the A/C can't be older than that.
And Jim, I don't think any of the A/C units have motors with a place to oil anymore like those Carriers did in the '70s.

My system is a "split", the inside "squirrel" type fan runs like a champ!, it was the outside condenser fan that went out. The outside motor is an A.O. Smith and also say's no need to oil? only holes in it are the drain holes on the bottom for moisture I guess.

I tell you what, A/C work is expensive. I called the supply house where I bought the unit and they said it only had a 2 yr warranty, told her figures since it was 3 months out of warranty
All I bought and installed my self was the "a" frame, outside piece and the 2 new freon lines (inny and the outy), I used the existing wire, breakers and T stat wire. My cousin quoted me $3000 to do it, I did it in 2 hrs including drive time for $1400:thumbsup: (4 ton)
The guy that invented A/C, I put right up there with the guy that invented WD-40!!!

The compressor fan went out on my AC a few years back, but I noticed and shut down the system right away. It was just the starting capacitor on the fan, a $15 part plus a $100 service call. If I had let it run, the motor would have fried.

Yep, that's the reason, when I had a complete new system installed in May of last year, I paid a little extra for a 10 year warranty, and I'm paying $12 a month for them to also come check it out, service it, etc. twice a year, even if I don't have a problem.

My A/C guy that I used at the restaurant for all the refrigeration and cooling said that most of the components for AC's were junk from China. He said he installed a lot of motors, compressors etc. that would end up only lasting 6 mo. to a year, however, most of the stuff he fixed for me stayed fixed and we had abused it all pretty much. Some times good A/C guys are hard to find.
