my policy on those who ask to borrow my high priced vulnerable equip: i try to be a good neighbor and say " sure, you can borrow ME and my equipment"...but i'm always the operator. wish you the best on that

I have the same policy.. if I have the time and actually want to do it, you're in luck. If not, you need either a rental unit or another person to borrow from.

So we buy a lot of large square hay bales and normally the dealer uses his front end loader to unload his wagons and pile in the barns. On occasion, in a pinch he has asked us if he can borrow our M7040 or M8540, depending on which farm he was delivering, and for the most part it has been OK - until this past week. ..........
SNIP
Leaves us wondering - this driver bangs up the tractor and just leaves - without telling us or his boss?? Some people..

Moral of the story is, be careful who you lend your tractor to. Things happen.

Red, that's a problem.....not the tractor, but what to do about it.
I've got a fair amount of equipment as I once had a repair shop and still have a little machine, welding, and engineering business. And although it's not in my nature to borrow things, it is in my nature to loan them. Frankly, I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping out. Back when I had more time and youth to help out in person things went pretty smoothly and that was twice as enjoyable. But as I get older, I do less of that and maybe because of that things happen that wouldn't otherwise. Most folks are good, but every once in a while I get the "really short end of the stick" so to speak, and am left at a loss as to how to respond.

As an instance I loaned a truck to an old friend recently and he returned it with one crushed side. "I sure am sorry about what happened to your truck." he said. But didn't offer to help fix it.

I'm not all that interested in punishing anyone for revenge...and I think I'm well capable of weighing the value of a truck versus a friend. And I didn't get where I am by just sitting back and being taken advantage of. It's all complicated by the fact that the people I loan things to tend to be good enough friends and neighbors that when things go wrong they feel some guilt even if don't express responsibility. Red, it sounds to me like all these things apply at your place as well.

Add to all that the fact that I'm especially not interested in allowing one bad character - or even a string of them - enough influence over my life to change something that I enjoy doing. Allowing them to affect my life really would be stupid.

What I do is evaluate each situation by itself. I don't form any overall policy. Except that if the person asks to borrow something again then we have a serious talk about what happened the last time. And if they don't want to borrow something again that tells me something too.....although in that case it is both more definite and sort of sad.
Enjoy! rScotty

I'm guessing that the person who

I tell just tell people I don't loan things out. But depending on what it is I'll try to help you. I believe you keep good relations longer that way then having someone ruin your stuff.

So ..... how many large square bales does that come out to ?

Usually over 1000 - fills all the hay storage areas on both places and leaves us with some overlap until the new hay comes in.

Thanks for all the comments everyone! Lots of good thoughts and ideas.

We thought we had a good relationship with this person (drivers boss) but now after he talked to the driver, who denied it - said he only tapped it ?? - he feels he is not responsible so we passed it over to the insurance company to handle and see what happens. Worst case is that we are out of the deductible. Not sure of his reasoning? He has not not billed us for the hay yet and this repair is nothing compared to the cost of the hay plus future business. So we were kind of surprised at his reaction. Will have to wait and see what happens now.

This is an interesting thread. Someone wants to buy my old tractor, but it may be cheaper to keep my old massey 165 as a loaner or if someone wants to 'help out'.
At least it was me that exploded the door on my cute m7040 not someone else (and it was cheaper than crushing the front end-condolances on that).

Sorry to hear of your mis-adventure here, but it's unfortunately true that human nature has not been improving over time, and there are even fewer people with honor and integrity any more. Seems to me your supplier may not be legally responsible if he "borrows" your equipment and one of his employees causes damage, and obviously he doesn't value you enough as a customer or an acquaintance to do the right thing on principle either.
