I have an overhead door at each end of my building and there is a fire extinguisher at each door. I figured I am more likely to weld near the doorway than in the center of the shop so I put them there for that reason.

Good thinking Birdhunter ! That is also the place to put them as you establish an egress by going to get it, you are now at a door and have an escape route if things go downhill.:thumbsup: hope you don't need it but glad you have it !

One of the very first things I hung on the wall in my shop. Put it right by the door since I figure there's a good chance I will be running that way regardless.
Thirty some years ago, in the early years of marriage,with a couple kids and hardly any extra money, my company offered first aid kits and fire extinguishers at their discounted cost. I came home all proud of my new extinguisher and my wife exclaimed, "I'll bet we get a lot of use out of that!" To which of course I could only reply "I hope we never use it!"
Still have that extinguisher mounted in the cellar way. Never have used it, but I have had it recharged.:thumbsup:

I gave fire extinguishers away as Xmas presents one year and everyone that I gave one to was really happy to get it. I hate giving presents I know recipients won't use but in this case I added a note "I Hope You Never Use This".

Just remember, most small dry chemical extinguishers are NOT rated for putting out solid combustibles (wood, paper, cardboard, plastic). If they are, the rating is very small. Most of them are rated for putting out liquid (grease) or electrical fires. BC rated extinguishers are only rated for liquid and electrical fires.
If you do have an A rated extinguisher, it's A rating will be much smaller than the BC rating. Something like 1A:8BC means it's solid fuel rating is only 1/8th the B rating.
A rating: solid fuel (wood, plastic, paper)
B rating: liquid fuel
C rating: electrical fire
MUCH more effective against solid fuel fires is a connected garden hose.

My friends father had a garden hose on a coil right at the top of the basement stairs that would reach the whole house, I always thought that was a good idea.
When I had a 50x60 commercial shop, the fire marshal required a fire extinguisher within 75 feet, so for that building one was enough.
I have fire extinguishers all over the place, most I got for free from a fire extinguisher service company near me, they are past their date of service, and can't be put back in commercial buildings but every one I ever tried worked just fine.
I've trained my kids on how to use them, made a fire outside and let them discharge some of the old extinguishers, just so they know what to expect if they ever need to do it for real.
Got some of the water filled ones as well, I keep one of those near my my fireplace.
