Believe what you want but I hand calculate every single tank using the same pump at the same gas station. Also, it's usually within 0.5 mpg of what the "optimistic" computer says.

 Someone's drinking the Kool-aid today!

Block the hole and get rid of that throw away Napa filter. If you seriously think a K&N filter will not work better than those cheap paper filters then go ahead and keep handing over money to the gas station. You WILL get better performance and better fuel mileage with a K&N.
I put my K&N filter in my truck at 25k miles when I bought it and now have over 110k miles. Every year I take it out, clean it and "recharge it". Amazingly, still no dirt in my engine.

True...I don't have a diesel, but I've been using K&N's for years..2 GM 4x4's had 200K when traded, the last one was traded at 100k...Never had a mechanical issue....Even on a gasser, the difference is somewhat noticable..Not supercharger noticable, but you can tell.

Wow some K&N bashing here. I put one in my truck and instantly got a solid 5+% increase in mpg's and a little more umph

I did read some of the negative stuff out there, but they say it will not void a warranty.

Gosh, it's time to tell the tale of my anemic !996 Dodge Cumins with the auto. It don't go fast or pass many vehicles unless it may be on a hill. Basically a dog!

Empty it gets up to 25 mpg. in the summer.

Put a 2400 pound camper in the back and it gets 18 mpg. That is over 3500 miles.

Add a 15,000 pound bumper pull trailer with the camper and it gets 14 mpg. Thats over 3500 miles.

At 230,000 kil. it still has the original auto in it.

When I bought it I asked the heavy duty mechanics at work what I should get and this Dodge with the exploding auto is what was recommended.

I'm Happy!:D:D

Oh, some of the mechanics had Ford Diesels.:)

You must drive up and down the highway and never see dusty conditions. I know of several contractors in the oil patch who dusted engines by using K&N filters. They were the big thing for a while, but most of them ended up in the trash. No kool-aid.

Unless you are making over 450hp. at the rear wheels on a Cummins, The K&N, AirRaid, Spectre, give absolutely zero net MPG or hp gains.
They do give a slight increase in "seat of the pants" feel in gassers, actual #'s vary by vehicle make...
The stock air box on the Cummins flows adequate air thru the Fleetguard paper filter that there is no gain to be had by an aftermarket gauze filter.
Many people have reported bad oil samples after switching to K&N filters.... swap back to stock paper and the oil samples return to normal...

Depending on the K&N setup, there are some more potential joints, they need to be tight and installed correctly. I don't believe a K&N would dust any engines down unless installed wrong. I don't know on diesels, but on gas engine vehicles, it can add a couple of percent horsepower.

K&N often has inflated claims, they are often real dyno numbers, which will often be inflated right after the K&N is installed, then the computer puts the air fuel mixture back to where it belongs after a couple of minutes, and the big horsepower jump goes back to where it belongs. I've read A LOT of info on K&N installs on late mode hemis, along with other brands, and the data is all over the place. In my opinion, its worth a few percent, and I've had my Challenger on a dyno.

Every drop of fuel that goes in my trucks goes on paper also for business reasons. That said all 3 of my trucks, 2 Ford Diesels, and 1 Nissan Titan have never been off from the computer by more than .25mpg. They are very accurate in these trucks and all my previous trucks for that matter from Ford and GM. Can not honestly remember if my 2500 Hemi had one or not.

As for the air filter I have ran MAC and K&N in every truck I have had since 2001. 7 different trucks, and never had a issue. I simply clean them every 15,000 miles and oil them per the instructions. I know tons of others running them with no issues either.

Agreed, I've had the same experience with K&N's...The oil patch example that was posted is a bit extreme...I'd probably have an AprilAir 2400 (house filter)as a prefilter if I ran in that dust every day.:D

WOW! You people are certainly passionate about your air filters! For the record, I don't need any more power. The Cummins makes plenty of power in stock form to pull anything I'm ever likely to put behind it. While a little boost in the fuel economy may be desirable, I'm not about to plunk down lots of money for chips, exhaust, air intakes and the like in hopes of a small gain. It would take years to ever recoup the cost of such investments for the few long trips I actually make... although I will admit, the banter has been entertaining!

As previously stated, I'll plug the hole and keep using stock components. It still does so much more than anything I've previously owned, plus, it stomps all over my Dad's chipped 7.3 Powerstroke w/K&N filtercharger.:D I can't rightly ask for more, can I?

Yup ... but I'm just not sure which aspect you are commenting on (the warranty issue or the downsides to K&N filters ......)

...... yeah ..... sigh ....

Try pricing a replacement Cummins ISB engine ....

I put my K&N filter in my truck at 25k miles when I bought it and now have over 110k miles.
Yeah but ..... will it go 500K or 1M ?

Every year I take it out, clean it and "recharge it".
Why .... is it restricted or something ?

You do realize that, generally, the dirtier an air filter is, the better it filters right ?

Amazingly, still no dirt in my engine.
Really ? ......

Uhhh ..... how exactly are you determining that ? :D

Got a bunch of UOA's with really low silicon numbers you'd like to show us ?

FWIW, as far as handing over money for cheap paper filters, I'm currently on "cheap paper replacement filter" number 2 in my van (3 total, counting the original) .... van has 345,000+ miles on it ....

I change 'em about every 120,000 miles or so ..... so that's about $50 spent for 345K of driving ...

Van weighs around 6,500 lbs. (8550 GVWR) ...... and averages 25 mpg ...
