Put the plastic rotating fan on, two cap screws, put the dust shield on, hmmmm, only two screws but 4 holes. Well, it isn't going to fly off, but I'll see about putting two more in it later. Can be done anytime.

Put the shroud back on. Lots of bolts, two that hold the fuel pump on. Everything is a different size or torks or whatever. Still, pretty straight forward affair.

Come around the other side, install voltage regulator, hook up red to red, black on regulator, green to green.

Time to hook up battery cables to new battery. Look everything over. Let's put a tie-wrap there to tidy up those wires. Getting closer to the moment of truth.

OK, so how did you get everything that clean. I've got a good air compressor and a bench grinder with a wire wheel on it now, but when I was down in the country and working on air tools, I also had a parts washer and a blasting cabinet (glass beads instead of sand). Of course I also had a seldom used 100 pound sandblasting rig.

Well it looks good, it sounds good, what does your wife think about it so far?

Glad you asked! :D:D

We've had only one meaningful rain event since late April, so the grass is long gone, but she took it for some tooling around.

My concern when I first saw this topic was watch out for the magnets, which it appears you did.few years ago I fixed cousins 30 or so yr old green JD Garden tractor (Onan horizontal crankshaft engine) the magnets were coming apart and caused damage to the stator windings. those flywheels are expensive!
I have not had issues with charging on my 2003 LT with well over 1000 hrs on it high percent of them hard/abused hours mowing several acres that had been several years since mowed or grazed.it has clutch/brake linkage issues now and pretty much has set for couple years now, and has original factory recalled oil slinging 18 hp Briggs remounted on it.
my 2005 GT now has a small car battery and a 2000lb winch likewise no charging issues. garden tractor has higher charge rate then the lawn tractors.

OK, so how did you get everything that clean.

An air gun attachment on a 90 lb air compressor does wonders for much of it. For the greasy spots and filth, Gunk Engine Bright works nice. Brake Kleen is another good product for cleaning things other than brakes.

Other than that, wipe, wipe, wipe.

I'm goofy enough to clean everything when I'm working on it. I prefer working in a clean environment and like to take the opportunity to really clean stuff up whenever I tear something apart and put it back together. Kind of **** that way, I guess.
