Who goes first, roofer or siding man?

The hail got me. I have to get new siding (vinyl), gutters, and shingle roof. Who goes first in the scheme of repairs? I assume the vinyl man takes care of rake board (which is really a folded piece of metal). I don't want to have the roof done only to have the next guy complain that he can't replace his pieces.

Typically the roofer before the siding. This is usually because of any flashing that the roofer may have at porch roofs or step flashing. The siding is the "counter flashing" or the last layer and therefore on top.
The sad part is that depending of your house, the siding guy will be lifting the shingle and driving nails thru your new roof (if shingled) for his pump jacks.
This may change somewhat if you are putting on a metal roof.

I did roofing for 9 years and you definitely want the roofer to do his work first. You wouldn't want a roofer to tear old shingles off when you have new siding/fascia on your house and risk getting black scuff marks on the new siding/fascia.

It probably depends on what/how much has to be done to both. If the sides are totally exposed, then at least get some housewrap in place regardless of how long you wait for the vinyl man. Same for the roof, get some roofing felt firmly installed right away with a lot of buttoncaps. If left exposed for any lenght of time, then use 30# felt, not 15#; it's worth the extra money.

Have done lots of roofing and siding anbd agree with you 100%, ALWAYS do the roofing FIRST.

And be SURE the roofer takes the time to cover your windows under the roof line with 2X4 frames and OSB sheathing or tarps to protect your windows from falling debris. Well worth the time involved, even if you do it yourself.
