Towing Question??

I weighed my 96 F350 long bed diesel crew cab shortly after getting it.
7700 lbs total with 200 lb me and two kids weighing at the time maybe 200, so 7300 lbs. Ford showed it at 6400 on the shipping docs IIRC.

I now have a metal utility top on and carry a bunch of tools, a winch out front etc, best guess now is almost at 10,000 empty with the now 250 lb me in it. This is based on scale weights at a quarry I pick up rock at with a trailer that supposedly weighs 3500, I scale in at around 13,500 and leave at 23,500.

I'm glad to hear of the OP using a stronger trailer, never hurts to be safe IMO.:thumbsup:

Normally anything over 5 tons must stop at weigh stations, but I've seen some bypass the scales and get away with it............I've also seen others pulled over less than a mile after running a weigh station.

That means every 5th wheel camper out there must stop and get loaded. I pull 18,000# plus all over the place and never stopped at a scale one single time. Never been chased down either.

As for the guys tires blowing, what brand? Carlisie and Goodyear Marathons are pure junk in my opinion. I had had both just blow for no reason. Now only sell and use Maxxis, Greenballs, and Hercules.

My 2006 F-350 SRW 4x4 short bed extended back with a diesel weighs 7,600# with me in it and 3/4 tank of fuel. I have no tool box or anything in the bed and maybe 30# of tools under the rear seat.

Since this kinda is the un-offical truck weight thread, I though I'd share mine.

I hauled some scrap in today. FULL tank of fuel and me (165lbs) and the truck weighed 7870. Maybe a few empty beer cans and a few ratchet straps in the bed was all.

It is a 2005 Dodge 3500 4x4 DRW long bed w/5.9 cummins. So with a 12,200GVWR, that gives me a 4330lb payload capacity. I can live with that. Allthough I was expecting a weight closer to 7500-7600 with just me.

My '01 F-350 is a 4x4, regular cab, flatbed dually with the 7.3 PowerStroke. Weighs right at 8,000 pounds 'empty' with a full tank of fuel and me in it. It was 7,900 before I put the toolbox on.

GVWR is 12,500 on mine.

When your 12,500 Gvwr truck only weighed 7900lbs. And that is with a V8 diesel???????

What do you think it should weigh?

The first time, I thought it said you had a crew cab. That's where my confusion came from, I couldn't figure out how Dodge managed to fit a bunch of extra sheet metal and interior, and weigh a bit less than a 2 door Ford. My mistake. :ashamed:

It is a quad cab. Maybe I forgot to mention that.

I still think its heavy.

As diamondpilot said, the fords are usually heavier. And I'm sure that flad bed you have on your 2-door is heavier than a regular bed.

The reason I though 7900 lbs was more than I expected is because according to doge's site, the curb weight of a new truck equipped like mine is only 7600lbs.

And if you click rhe regular cab 8' bed one, it is only 7100lbs. So the Quad-cab long bed is ~500 lbs more.

Todays update, towed truck to Baltimore, MD. Left Disputanta, VA (below Petersburg, VA) at 3:30am this morning, arrived in MD at about 8:30am. Took our time (55-60 mph), stopped a few times to check straps and chain. Stopped once for breakfast. Not one issue at all, the Cummins performed flawless. Only downshifted two times for entire trip. Towed over 10,000 lbs today and I was impressed. I borrowed a larger trailer (5 ton) to make this trip. I have some pictures attached of the way we strapped trailer to truck. Private owner trailers don't have to stop at weight stations.
By the way got 13.39 mpg for entire trip, loaded up and emply trailer on return.

Glad it went well. Did you hand calculate the fuel or use the dash? I take it you also got a heavier trailer to use for the trip.
