PTO revisited

Gramps,

I'm not familiar with the Taskmaster (DongFeng) tractors, but on my Jinma the PTO main engage/disengage lever is located by my right foot. It is a straight lever that comes from the right side of the differential housing and extends forward about 5-6". To engage the PTO it is pulled up while the clutch pedal is fully depressed. To disengage it is pushed down. It is labeled wit the legend,"ENG/DIE" - that one confused me at first as I could only think it meant Engine Die. After I read the manual I learned better. :ashamed:

Your Dong Feng very likely has some analogous lever somewhere. You just have to find it.

The lever you are speaking of is the eng/disengage for the front wheel drive on my tractor. (left side) This is annotated in the manual as such. My manual clearly states the center position on the speed control lever is a neutral position. Where would your 4wd lever be if this is for your PTO?

"Where would your 4wd lever be if this is for your PTO? "

That is NOT the PTO lever for my tractor. My 4WD lever is just where yours is, on the left side. The PTO lever, (as I noted), is on the RIGHT side. To the right of it is the foot pedal that is depressed to temporarily lock the rear differential (diff lock).

My PTO speed ratio lever (to the left of the seat) has three positions: 540 - Neutral - 720. That neutral position on the ratio control lever does not disengage the PTO primary power train, only the secondary ratio gearing.

If your Dong Feng manual does not indicate the presence of a main PTO engage/disengage lever, I suppose it is possible that your tractor has an "always live" PTO. Not a situation I would like, but I suppose it is possible.

Not sure if you D|F has two levers or not but thought it worth asking. The Jinmas have a lever back of the RH side of the seat for speed control and another slightly in front of the seat on the RH side to negage/disengage as Rich explained -- see if you have a lever you cannot figure out a purpose for or ask a dealer.

Sure is rather strange. I have no levers/controls I can not account for. The manual does state that the neutral position disengages the PTO, but it does not on mine, which was what raised the original question. As I said earlier it has a good cover/shield around it, I don't need it so I'll live with things as they are.

Hi, I use to sell DF tractors but have been out of it for a while. I do remember this problem and you need to check a couple of items. When the PTO is disengaged and still turning, put a slight load on it and see if it stops. If it does then you will find the needle bearings are binding on the live shaft. In other words, the PTO shaft is mounted on a live turning shaft and is separated by needle bearing between the two shafts. I think you can purchase a new needle bearing assembly with a roller cage to hold the bearing in place so they don't bind. I have ordered some slightly smaller needle bearings and that also appeared to work. I hope this helps.

My DF has only the one lever on the left. Center is neutral and forward and back for 540/1000. I will have to check if it moves freely when in neutral ( with engine off) and report back.

Thanks for the last responses. After a little adjustment in free travel the PTO will now freely turn when clutch is fully depressed and engine is stopped.
