I just got done pricing the parts for a rebuild for my engine. The machine shop tells me that the crankshaft needs to be ground .020 to clear up the damage. The bearing costs are astronomical. Nearly 150.00 dollars for one bearing. No way am I going to pay that. If I can't find a cheaper source for parts. This thing is going in the junk pile and I'll find another engine, either new or used. I guess it's the American way to gouge a consumer with totally ridiculous prices when they think they can. By the way the bearing for the opposite end of the crank is only 50.00 bucks, go figure.

I have a 317 that I rebuilt after the Kohler Series 1 engine blew. I was able to find a series II short block on weekend freedom machines (google it) for about $800. It runs like a champ now. It probably wasn't worth the price but it wasn't just about the money 
I was trying to tell my brother it wasn't just the money. He would rather go to Lowes and buy a cheap knockoff of the real thing. Oh well, change the things you can and fix it when it breaks. I can't get it in my head to part out a good piece of equipment. Guess I'm just too old school.

That's the exact reason I put the time and money in redoing my 316.
That bearing price seems way out of line. Is that a quote from the machine shop?
Did you happen to email Onan and ask if they had oversized main bearings?

I found a source for parts for the onan engine. So far I have spent a little over 600.00 dollars. I decided I would go ahead and rebuild it completely. New pistons ,rods bearings seals and the whole works. I could have bought a used engine for what I will have in it when I am finished, but the way I look at it better the devil you know. I have a 3520 that I use to do the big wide open mowing, and a 140 that I use for the trim work. The 317 was what I used before I bought the 3520. I installed the Onan engine in it after it threw a rod. A lot of people can't understand, but I can't seem to part with old equipment. I would rather repair old iron any day, but I am not adverse to modern equipment, hence the 3520. It's been the best purchase I've ever made but I don't it will last as long as my 140. Just my 2cents.
