4720 SCV Float mode?

To engage float you have to move the valve spool past a catch (called a "detent" in hydraulics terminology) at the end of the loader lower spool movement. To do this, push the joystick forward to lower the loader to the ground, then give the joystick a quick hard snap further forward. It should then stick in that position by itself until you pull it back. You will then be in float mode.

You can practice this with the tractor off and the loader on the ground to get the feel of it.

I have recently purchased a JD 4600. When backdragging, I had trouble getting the joystick to stay in float position. I thought there might be an adjustment, so I took the cover off and looked things over. Not seeing an obvious adjustment, I thought "let's search TBN."

I found and read this thread. Sure enough, the problem was only that I wasn't giving the stick enough "snap" when I pushed it forward. In the garage, with the tractor off, I can now make it stay in float whenever I want to.

It's raining now, so I'll have to wait a bit before trying the float out for real. TBN (with the collaborative knowledge of it's members) is a great resource. Thanks to everyone who participated in this discussion!

Glad you figured it out, it's an absolute necessity for snow removal IMO.
I don't use it for back dragging my self, but I'm sure there are other tasks that it would help with.
