Feds to require CDL for farm tractors

Many of these new "rules" are just another form of taxation as governments seek new ways to plug holes in their budgets..

Next one will be EPA requiring us to wear 'breath counters' and pay tax for each breath of clean air we take - because they make it clean for us... It's a stretch but I think they're looking for every possible way into our pockets. I'm fine and dandy with paying taxes, just stop pi**in it down the drain.

In my opinion this is but one more indication of how badly broken our country and culture is and sadly, I don't know if it can be fixed. It may be too late. The legislation gets passed and then the real pain comes from the career bureaucrats that write the rules underlying the legislation and congress has no say in that.

I agree completely agree.

As a poster said earlier I think it makes sense to have to get a CDL if you are driving a farm truck on the road. Also, I think those trucks should have to get some sort of inspection done on them. Even if they travel 10 miles, that doesnt matter how far away from home it is if it breaks a drag link, blows out a tire, etc and hurts someone. Many of the farm trucks I have seen should probably not be on the road even going 40 mph.

That being said, I cannot see any reason in this world that tractors would have to fall under the same category. Many of the systems on trucks are no where near similar to those on tractors.

I'm not going to say it's right, but, with the ever increasing size of tractors and the implements they haul, it may not be such a bad idea.

You wouldn't want a Fendt, JCB Fastrac or similar hauling a 7,000 gallon manure tank coming down a hill at 40 some-odd mph driven by some yahoo. These are exhaust brake, hydraulic trailer brake & mostly steering implement axle equipped rigs hammering down the road.

I know of more than 1 farm around here that has had some substantial tractor damage from operators freewheeling down hills, not turning slow enough and such.

I'm not saying it's a great idea, but maybe with a little tweaking, it's not a bad idea.

I wouldn't think every compact tractor or lawn tractor would need a CDL, but maybe something like the 26,000 lb weight cutoff idea.

I'm amazed that something so idiotic was considered in the first place, it's makes me nervous.

Think about it: If our fine politicians dream up & try to pass super-dooper-idiotic laws like that one, maybe we'll be happy (relieved?) & just accept their mere super-idiotic laws.

Like, "We need to raise taxes by 40%. Oh, you don't agree? But we really need it. Oh, OK, if you're gonna fuss, then we'll lower it to 'only' raise them by 20% ... which is a huge 50% reduction in what we were originally proposing. You are welcome, peasants of the US."

Why does one terrible ACCIDENT or stupid act result in a law to supposedly protect everyone from themselves. This government intrusion has got to stop. I drove combines and articulating tractors down the road at ten years of age, so a cdl would have been a little difficult. Thats why most rural roads are called farm to market.

IT gets worse you need a hazemet endorsement to haul fuel. This requires $100.00 every four years for Homeland security to renew your endorsement. Finger printed and the whole works. I thought it was a one time thing and went through the process. NO it is every time you redue your CDL.

Good Afternoon 2458n,
You are correct !

I have hauled petroleum products, and still do on a very limited basis. Not only do you have to do the Homeland security baloney all over again but you have to go to your local DMV and take the written Hazmat and Tanker endorsement test all over again !!! Just dont get how many sets of fingerprints they really need ! :(

Darn I passed the test the first time.....:confused2:

Got any links to that.

From what I have read linking tractors to the CDL was a bit of a leap.

There was a link in the first post of this thread.
