4000 su lift

my neighbor has a 4000 su with trouble in the rear lift. it is almost impossible to set it ANYWHERE in between all the way up or down. does anybody know if it is a simple adjustment inside the cover or is there more to it than that.

Is the control lever in draft control instead of position control? That sounds like the symptoms of having the control lever to "draft." Look for a small lever on the right side of the hydraulic cover under the seat.

I still think it is likely he has something keeping hydraulic lift in draft control. Perhaps something is worn or broken in his draft control handle linkage. When a Ford tractor of this vintage is in draft control, slight movement of the lift lever off the upwards stop will cause the lift to go all the way down. Then the lift relies on compression of the toplink and the draft control spring to control how deep the plow is in the ground. So, the 3PH would drop as soon as he moves the lever off the full up stop, just like you described in the initial post.

The small draft control lever in the down position puts the 3PH in draft control. Moving the lever to the up position changes the 3PH to position control. This is a small lever, not the large "touch control" lever that is used to control the implement position. If the small lever in the up position does not restore position control, then the hydralic cover and assembly needs to be removed and adjustment or repair done.

in addition to the draft issue, his cam / cam follower pin may be wore slap out giving him virtually no lift resoloutioin between up / down.. further complicating this is if it is worn and there is a draft issue.. his linkages may be out of adjustment, making for lousy control at the quadrant.

thanks guys i figured it is an internal issue. is there an easy way to check it out once the top cover is removed or is there special tools needed to check the adjustments?

there -were- special tools needed.. but you can adjust without the nuday tools using the alternate adjustment procedure found int he service manual.
