My pole barn...a solo affair

I agree, the inch of red will not be noticable.......except by me. Wish I would have foresaw this and got white edge trim.

Oh my oh my ....how could you possibly have screwed up so badly.......well OBVIOUSLY there's no other choice ...you'll have to go buy the extra trim AND naturally you'll have to totally rebuild the doors from scratch to make it all fit correctly .....:confused2::confused2:;)........wish all my screw ups were to this degree...:ashamed:...It's a barn door not a pinafore....you're never gonna see it....and when you put on the squares that 1" may just go away --can't imagine they'll be an exact fit. If I built something like that and it came to within an inch -- I'd be pleased as I could be. Remember close enuff for gummnit work = measure with micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with ax.:D

Hi all, I'm building a 16X24 pole barn with eight posts and four trusses. The question I have is how far apart do you put the purlins between the trusses. I want to use galvanized aluminum roofing.

After doing more research, many places are recommending 18" or 12" OC. Which would be better since I live up here in RI?

Okay Y'all,
I have decided to just put the five red squares like the Purino logo, with no edging around the 5 red squares, centered on the door.
So I will have to get white siding on first. That will make it cheaper. Then install the five, 3x3 foot red squares.
Only nuisance I see going this way is I have red metal edges on the 2x6 frame, so about an inch of red will show on the sides and bottom.:confused3:
hugs, Brandi

Put the red siding on first and just make the white squares (4). Do the math and forget about 3x3. What ever it comes out too, make it symetrical.
What are the exact finish dimensions of the door? Is it longer than it is wide?
If youleft red on the bottom it will look fine.

Robert,:)
I just want to make it look like the Purina Checkboard logo centered on the door.;) The Purina logo is basically 5 red squares.

Go back and read the last few pages here and you will see the answers to all your questions.

Mike,
I know, beat it to fit and paint it to match. Guess I am just too much of a perfectionist. I need to remember to broaden my tolerances. Too many years working plus or minus .003"

You laugh now, but you will laugh again when I say I thought about ripping the red edge trim off and saving it for the back door, then install new white trim. But I want to move on with the barn and not digress more than I need to do.

Barn door to you.;) Work of "pinafore" art to me.:D Believe me, I had fits when I found out my plumb poles sighted 6 foot off the ground could be warped 2-3 inches (and more) at the top of the joists. Next pole barn will be 6x6 inch square milled poles . More expensive, but will help you keep your sanity.;)

I had a couple of poles that really had a warped curve.:mur: I had to dig two up, concrete and all, and push them over with my old Ford 3055 then reconcrete.:tractor: I got the close one plumb at the top, but the bad one had to have shims and notched.:mur::mur: This was all to the right of me in the third photo. Yes, I am wearing red rubber boots.

You can also see in the third photo the pole that was really curved and is the one I pushed over, then shimmed and notched. It is the third pole back on the right. Notice how it leans in real bad.

My first pole barn I used cedar trees I cut off the place. They weren't straight and they tapered A LOT. I didn't set the bases until I had side stringers on, then I plumbed those as best I could by moving the poles. Then I shimmed the tops where I needed to. It ain't purdy but it's still standing 30 yrs later. What I'm saying is, cut yourself a break, Don't sweat the small s_it. Take care of the major items and the small ones will take care of themselves. The wife and I agree that our marriage isn't 50/50 -- it's 40/40 and the other 20 is just nits that don't need to be picked. Same thing with big projects.

RobertBrown,
If I had a red background with the dominate color of the logo being red, it will all blend in and not POP like red on a white background.
