This is "rotary cutting" with a disc mower in Coastal bermuda hay, and the real payoff three days later when it gets raked and baled after two fluffs.

I think this is the most enjoyable thread I've ever seen on TBN!

It's great seeing everyone's land and equipment... And just the way others live.

Just great!

With mine, its not making a clean cut... most stobs are pretty much shattered.
No problems with R4's

My same results. Tractor leans saplings over, bush hog blades start knocking into the bent over tree, battering it more & more until it breaks off, shattered. No clean cuts, like a chain saw would do, which would be more likely to puncture a tire. These shattered stobs also rot away & disappear very quickly.

2 things to remember. 1) when cutting grass, use sharp blades. 2) when cutting brush and small trees use dull blades.

My rule of thumb;
Sharp is 1/16 inch or narrower edge. Dull is greater than 1/16th with 1/8 being the target.

That's an interesting point. Mine are relatively dull and I noticed it's not doing a great job on grass and weeds. I rarely cut small brush or saplings ( I don't like the stumps left behind for horses or people walking), so I may sharpen mine up a tad.

When you get up to the 15' wide rotary cutters I have to ask: Why?

It looks like you are cutting a LOT of acreage that way. What is the land use? Are you maintaining low growth for livestock? If not, why not hay the area?

Just curious...not trying to ruffle feathers.

I do ~5 acres with my 6' cutter right now. 1 of those acres will be pasture within the next year or 2 for my goats so I don't want it over growing, but I haven't gotten around to fencing it. The other 5 are areas with trees that I just don't want turning into brambles and low growth woods. Not sure "why" but I just like it better this way.

If I had 10-20 acres or more that needed a 15' mower, I would be looking at hay.

You still gotta clean the cattle pasture up,let the cattle graze it down then go in with Big shredder and knock the weeds down(rotate cows to other pasture),you mite just barely be tipping the top of the grass. If you hay every pasture were the cattle going graze?You have to have pasture to run the cows,while your hay pastures grass is growing so you can bale and put up hay for the winter...I usually spray the weeds and once they have died go in and shred..I have a 40ac.bottum that usually floods in winter and shred in august by then the water weeds are 4ft tall,then we have a powerline R.O.W I have to shred (100ft wide by over a mile). Cant afford to spray all 400 acres every year;)

In my area people use the 15' bat wings for cutting stalks, maintaining CRP, clipping pastures and mowing ditch banks as well as pond levies.
