Be aware that engines with an oil switch may not work well on a tiller. When tilling the engine leans back as the tines go deep into the soil and depending on where the switch is, it may cut off the engine. You may have to overfill the engine to compensate.

The 11 hp Briggs I plan on buying doesn't have a low oil switch it is designed for the Troy-Bilt horse and they use on the Big Red horse I have a lot of clay where I live and it hard to plow with a small motor I rather have a motor too big than one not big enough My tiller is a pto version 3rd generation Troy-Bilt horse tines wear out fast in clay I would like to have some Pick tines Pick tines have been discontinued and hard to find:confused2:

Hi" Wild bill have a coupe of questions since you seem to to be way ahead of me on this project. How do I find out what generation my tiller is? where did you get the information on the 11 hp b/s eng. that your planning on using and what about the elect start set up is it interchangeable or are you planning on a pull start setup?you said that it is designed for the horse but am wondering as to the height of the shaft in relationship to my speed belt pulley . Have you overcome these problems as well? Tk's Paul

Small Engine Warehouse has the 11hp Briggs already setup for the horse tiller the 4 speed model not the older two speed model they have several engines any brand you want and have kits to go along with them troy used the motor on older models when it was garden way before mtd bought them out to find out what generation tiller you have does it have one belt or two the first generation had two belts the second had one the third was a pto version it has a lever to engage the tines on the back of the tiller all are good equipment can last a long time with right care

Thank you for the info. i will check them out and due a follow up. I think my horse is before mtd it has one belt must be second generation. I bought it second hand back in 91 and it had a mile or two on it then.but not bad enough that a good going over did not cure we use it at least 2 to 3 times a year. Paul

I recommend you don't buy a motor with a plastic pulley it may save you some trouble stay with the 3/4 shaft one of the reps from small engine warehouse told me they are having a lot of trouble with plastic pulleys I would recommend using a Briggs or a Kohl er Motor Both are durable engines please contact me if you have any problems

Thanks:
Again thanks for your help and advice Ours has the double pulley and I agree I hate the word plastic would do anything before being forced to use it. yep i will use either one of those engs. But I know the krohler is good a good one we have one in our old yard tractor and it runs like a clock now for the past 16 years with just regular oil changes. We have some new equipment that has the new b/s engs they are new no time test they seem ok but they have not proved them selfs to me as yet was not to overly impressed with them before. I have a few more projects in-front of me now and was saving this one for winter as it can be done inside the shop but I when saw you question it was the same as was my thoughts and I need to talk with some one about this project thanks for the offer to contact you in the future PLEASE keep in touch and let me know how yours is coming along. Paul
