gonna look nice when you go to that kind of exacting detail. probably nicer than when on the sales lots after 'assembly line' production.. etc.

I don't want it to appear too nice i.e. fakey. I'm not going to use clear coat as some guys use or super perfect glossy paint.

I want the tractor to appear as if everything went right on the assembly line that day.

I want to do it as guys who are restoring muscle cars are doing-duplicating factory "techniques" i.e.e minor overspray and some very very minor orange peel in applicable areas. When I mean overspray-not the human error type but if every tractor had that overspray.

900 to 1200 for one that runs. For one that works well 1800 to 2200. Restored nicely 3000 to 4000.

If you are going to invest much money and effort j suggest finding a old tractor that's rare. This way you will have an investment as well as a toy. The N series tractors are very common even now. Because of this their price doesn't change much even if condition is excellent.

Have fun! Good for you on involving your kids with something "real". Too much tv and video games nowadays.

IMHO.. you DO want a gloss finish enamil. not a matte or flat finish on that tractor.

for one, it will be easier to keep clean.. flat paints will pick up grease stains MUCH esier.

gloss is the way to go for SURE

Soundguy, it is going to have a gloss finish just as the factory produced and nothing more. A local guy painted an AC and the paint is like a mirror-can see your reflection in it and they were never like that new.

I disagree.

when i painted my allis G, I used alkyd enamil paint. that's the same paint tech used in the 30's I did not use clear coat. I pretty much ONLY use alkyd or acrylic modified paints... old tech stuff more or less.

The finish was mirror and you could see yourself in it. in fact.. when I posted the pic, that was the first omment I got.

I've seen plenty of vintage ford literature with pics of tractors in it with glare and mirror finish on them..

I think you are underestimating the finish produced by simple alkyd paint on a smooth metal surface that has been primed and finished 'correctly'.

Looking for some input...my wife thinks we are crazy, but my kids and I want to get our hands on an older N series tractor to spend some quality dad/son time together. The question is, I'm seeing a wide range of prices and don't know what to make of it. For example, locally there is a totally restored 41 9N in showroom condition for 2,700. The other 9N's I've seen here have been in working condition for 1,200 - 2,000 but not anything you'd say is parade ready. I know they guy with the restored one must have spent easily 1,500 on the paint alone, so what is a fair price on a 9n in need of some work, but running? It seems to me, I'd be $ ahead to just purchase a completed project.

Almost forgot, I have an opportunity to buy a 2000 Diesel for 2,500, this is the early 70's model, would this be a more useful tractor? I would assume so, but any pitfalls to look out for?

Just curious but how much quality time can you spend with your sons if you buy a tractor thats completely done. My sons and I buy ones that typically are in running condition. Might need some minor engine work but mostly ugly ones. We take our time and spend a couple months taking them apart, cleaning, sanding and painting. Last project was a $1500 850 with a loader. Put about $1500 in parts and paint ($35 a gal. from TSC). We went from this

This is my idea of spending quality time with my sons. We've done about 6 so far and just picked up another for this winters project.
Good luck and hope you enjoythe time you can spend with the boys as much as I do. That is my younger son driving the tractor with our neighbors grandson on his lap.

Congrats. An excellent restoration. $3K for a 35 hp tractor with FEL is a real bargain.
