Looks like the crankcase ventilation hose, aka: slobber tube. It allows combustion gasses that sneak past the piston rings to exit the engine crankcase. Without it, your engine would build up pressure an blow out the oil seals.

Must be your only off-road diesel engine. ;)

Sounds reasonable. Just noticed it seems to be smoking more than I recall before.
Actually, it's my only diesel.

Could the increase be an indication of rings wearing or something else I ought check out?

A visible increase in crankcase gasses can be caused by weather conditions, short operating times (build up moisture), oil getting thin (is it time to change?), etc, etc.
A worn-out engine will have more blow-by than a new one, but that's probably not your case. A blown head gasket would also explain it, but you would be loosing coolant too. Again, unlikely. If I were a betting man, my money would be on the short operating interval. A diesel motor takes several minutes of working under load to reach operating temperature. Then, even after reaching that temp, it takes a while for the moisture in the crankcase to evaporate and migrate out the slobber tube. If that's the case, you can run it longer or just change the oil early.
If the engine is not consuming a lot of oil or losing coolant, etc, don't worry about it.

Thanks, I did a bit of searching on this forum and found some good threads.
So far... I think I'll change the oil!

I agree with bigfoot.

Could be worn rings but if it was sudden then i dont think that is the case. It will always have something most likely but increase is prolly just moisture from rain or condensation from high humidity maybe. Check that coolant level and for bubble in the radiator to confirm no blown head.

Edit:

Meant to also say that id make note of it, change the oil, check it again after an hour of running it. Then keep a check on the coolant to make sure your not loosing any into the oil. But if those things check out ok and you have good power, just run it and dont worry about it as long as you have adequate power.

i have seen a vid on youtube of blowby that looked like a little exhaust pipe there was so much! Mine has as few drips as i bushhog of oil that is slung up there i guess or condenses maybe, not constant but just a bit after running, not sure i have even seen a spot on the concrete the few times i have parked on it. And after a hard run i see if i look hard very faint smoke or condenstion burn off? But i have to look and concentrate to see it!
