Your first sentence in your post reads and I quote: "A transformer can take 7200-14400 volt low amp power...."
That it does. But if you had bothered to read his next two sentences you would have seen that he then said: "If you backfeed the transformer with 240 volt, it will/can put out 7,200-14,400 volts of power onto the overhead lines" (as seen below)
errrrrr. wrong. A transformer can take 7,200 - 14,400 volt low amperage power and convert it to high amp low voltage (240 volt) power. However this is where a generator transfer switch comes in. If you backfeed the transformer with 240 volt, it will/can put out 7,200-14,400 volts of power onto the overhead lines. This can ruin a lineman's day.

Reading the whole post before attacking grsthegreat would have been worth your while.

Talk about flaming someone.

1. If you are indeed someone with electrical engineering background, why would yo ever suggest that someone do something AGAINST the National electrical codes?? Refer to Articles 700 -705 in the code book.

2. I never said a generator can produce 7200 volts, i said a generator producing 240 volts then run back-wards thru a transformer WILL produce 7200 - 14,400 volts. Quit mixing up my words and meanings.

I don't want to get in a pissing fight with anyone. Doing so will simply get this thread shut down.

I simply want to protect th lineman out there from improper AND ILLEGAL installation of a generator to a main panel. Its unconscionable for anyone to tell someone that is unsure how to back-feed a house to do the install in an illegal and potentially FATAL manner.

NOW, as for proof, just google lineman killed by illegal generator

and a few thousands more/.

For someone that does not want to get into a ****ing contest you sure keep adding fuel to keep the fires going.

My Daddy taught me there are just certain types of people you do not get into discussions with, YOU QUALIFY.

How MANY TIMES do I have to post that I ENDORSE and ENCOURAGE use of safety transfer swithches??????????

I do not see where I gave instructions to anyone on how to backfeed a service. Wake up.

I am done with you and this thread.

Wow! lets cool down a bit folks :)

I would never advocate powering a panel with a genny without a foolproof switch but I would do it myself if the need arose. And I would be totally comfortable knowing I'm not gonna energize the grid. But that's me, I wouldn't expect my wife or kids to know how to do it properly.

As far as it being illegal? I don't see how it could be unless you did in fact send power back out to the neighborhood.

Those first 2 links above seem to be about the same guy/ situation?
In the last link, The young guy is asking advice and is told "the work is hot or ground it out" in other words they don't take chances.

I wonder if it was ever proven that the guy in the links was killed by a generator or if that wasn't just a convenient excuse for some other mistake.
In the chaos of a restoration of large parts of the grid, I'm sure they are not sure when any particular section will come back hot, they can never assume a line is dead unless they actually see it.

It almost went the other way for me. I could of been killed by the power company. I was restoring a small industrial building and was redoing the electrical system, we had the service disconnected at the pole and was supposed to be cold for 3 more days, we were doing work on the main breaker/switch box when I looked out the window and saw the bucket truck out front, the guy had the hot stick and was ready to connect the service without even knocking on the door. When I barked at him, he said it was a miscommunication

Pixguy are you sure no in NH lost power?? Im still without it on tues night at 9 pm and I only live about an hour from NH.

I'm really unsure how much of NH was w/o power, but I check my IP cameras and they still operate and would not if I had lost power.
I'm STILL in RI, in the dark.... 75% of the state who lost power is back and they say that it will probably be sunday till the area is back with power.

For me, I'm heading up to NH thursday am where I actually have a 7000watt genny but as of right now they haven't lost it in my area up there.

If the linesman doesn't get electrocuted it won't be because of any effort on your part.

So tired of the same ol guys that know everything and surely not afraid to tell everyone..........Seems to me, from experience, that if by chance one leaves a main breaker open, it will overload the genset and blow the output breaker there......I mean immediately.........BUT what do I know........and surely dont think that just because I say it that everyone else is wrong........God bless.......Dennis

On the news tonight they showed an area where the power company line crews where gathering, they had to have police protection cause people are so frustrated they are threatening the workers :confused2:

Probably 95% of the time, but there is still a small chance that it will energize lines and not blow the breaker. And as mentioned if back fed thru a transformer would step up the voltage to primary levels of up to 13KV.

The linemen I talked to last week confirmed that indeed that can happen.

Hi,

Here in NH if PSNH finds a generator set to back feed into a service they will disconnect the meter and only reconnect upon installation and inspection of an approved manual or automatic transfer switch.

That being said, I have a 6 circuit manual transfer switch, 30' 10-4 marine twist lock cable, outdoor weatherproof connection box for a 7.5KW generator. I'll cut TB'ers a special price if your interested.

When we moved to the mountain, we put in a Generac 21Kw stationary genset with an auto transfer switch, we went through the ice storm here several years ago and were on generator for 14 days, it was costly for the propane even running it for 6-7 hours per day.
