Massey-Ferguson 1529
i am the proud owner of a new Massey-ferguson 1529 Hydro, and am due for the 50 hour service. The manual says to clean the Transmission filter(1 of 2) in "solvent or kerosene", so I was wondering what others used as a solvent......It also says to apply sealant to the threads on the drain plug, I'm guessing I can get that at any auto parts store..??......Thanks for any help....!!

As far as which solvent to use, I don't know, I'd be careful with jet fuel (kerosene), for obvious reasons, not that they're all not flammable.
I just finished the 50hr service on my Kioti CK30. All my filters, 2 hydraulic and the engine oil filter were replaced. My dealer includes the service as part of the sale, so I don't know what the cost of those filters would be, but since the hydraulic filter(s) are changed so infrequently, I'd say you're better just to put a new one on and forget messing around trying to clean it, especially with the first service that will get rid of a bunch of metal filings.

Not knowing what your reusable filter looks like, I will venture a guess that it is just a fine wire mesh screen type and would think that any solvent from acetone to zylene would work. Just use what ever you have on hand. Diesel fuel would be my choice since it says to use kerosene. I dont have kero but I do have tractor fuel. I would not waste money and natural resources to replace a new undamaged cleanable filter

Thanks guys, It is a reusable filter so I thought cleaning it was the way to go,I believe it has a seal as well and didnt want to use anything that might dry it out somehow......I will probaly see how acetone works......

I would caution about using acetone on anything rubber or plastic - like a seal.

Diesel fuel is an excellent solvent for what you describe. Wipe the filter dry, blow it out with compressed air, and you are good to go.

Ditto that recommendation on skipping the acetone...that stuff can be pretty aggressive. Not sure why the suggest sealant, but I got some at the parts store for sealing bolts that protrude into the engines water jacket...that might work. Asking them (the parts pros) might get you what you need.

Ditto!! Use diesel. The filter for our 1635 (belly filter.) is $162.

Going to wash it out.

Yeah, save the acetone for removing your fingernail polish.

Thanks everyone for all the input.....I did get some thread seal @ local parts store, and gonna try diesel to clean the reusable filter.....I think it should clean up well just being 50 hrs......changing out the other hydraulic filter as well then on to the front axle oil.....thinking about synthetic for the next change but got LOTS of research to do..!!

Run an EP Rated synthetic gear in the front axle.

Going to run duratran synthetic next service, and will get a Cat SOS oil analysis done on the permatran.
