L4740 vs L5240

I talked myself into the 5 extra ponies from the L4240 to the L4740 and I'm bouncing around how much value there is in going to the L5240.

The dimensions between the two seem nearly the same. I'm inclined not to go for the extra 5hp and save the money as they both will take the same size loader and implements.

Any thoughts that might make me swing towards the L5240 instead?

What are you guys seeing as the price difference between these two models in your area?

I have never even seen a 4740 or 5240 on either of the lots in my area. In that general size all I see are the 4240 then 5740.

I run a 5030 HSTC as does TEXASJOHN and Slowzuki plus a couple of others and even without the HST+ it has all the power I really need. I run a Land Pride RCR2672 in some really thick stuff and pull a medium duty 7' box scraper.

When/if I trade, I will go with a 5240 or 5740 because the 5040 isn't offered with a cab.

I have to admit I like HP, but I really don't know you will run into anything where the HP difference between a 4740 and 5240 will really make a difference.

You have the MF255 for grunt work don't you?

The extra HP sure is nice when it comes to PTO implements. Snow blower comes to mind. ;)

I primarily purchased it to run a manure spreader as I hate hooking and unhooking when I am spreading manure.

Really is a two tractor job. That and there is the odd time when one tractor gets stuck somewhere and another one would sure be handy :) Does not happen very often but when it does it is sure nice to have another one around.

True although I think the 4740 will have more than enough HP to handle a 74" or so blower. I was thinking more along the lines of if I move to a bigger property as planned in the next 3-5 years or so and/or want to plow up one of my pastures for some reason, the hp might come in handy. Then again, in that case I'd be wishing for the biggest M I could find and (don't tell my wife!) would consider trading up for it.

Then again no reason I can't plow and such with the Massey although the bota with the cab will be oh so much more comfortable :)

I've got to draw the line somewhere. Right now it is sitting at the 4740. If they had the LA1153 loader on the GL5x40 - that would be a GREAT reason to get it.

I just purched a Kubota 4740 HST, the tractor is great. I had a L4200 GST and there is a world of difference between the two. I have many PTO attachments and haven't felt under powered with the 4740 . The only thing I haven't tried is the Lucknow 84" two stage snow blower. In the past the L4200 would start puffing black smoke when I would bury the blower into a drift/pile of snow, higher and wider than the blower. The reason I didn't purchase the next bigger tractor because of fear of Turbo/emission problems, and I really don't think I needed it.

Yep the L5240 has both a turbo charger and exaust gas recirculation. The 4740 is just plain 'ol engine. My L5040 is GST and it has the turbo but not the EGR. The EGR seems pretty simple but I've not heard how well it holds up.

I run a 72" front mount on mine and the only time I have a problem is with dense snow that's as high or higher than the blower itself. It's not a HP problem but only so much snow can get into the secondary impeller. If I go too fast it will start to plow the snow.

I think the GL5x tractors have larger tires that are a more common size. If you're doing lots of loader work it might be nice.

They are the exact same size - 17.5L-24 R4s. Dimensions of the L4740 and L5240/L5740 are almost the same also. Within an inch or so. Length is ~3" longer.

I was thinking that you were looking at getting R1s.

Ah yes. At one point I was strongly going in the direction of R1's. I've now settled on R4s for some flotation on the wet parts of my pasture and so as not to tear up any more areas that I have to go through than I already do. Plus the tire being beefier for loader work.

I talked to a dealer who pointed out to me that he recommends the R4s in the CUTs for those doing loader work but R1s are what he would go with if I were getting an M series. I suspect that the R1s in the M are beefier wrt. ply or something and perhaps fluid capacity.

Check to see if the R1 are radials, Michelin for example. Beats the pants off of bias ply any day, especially when it comes to flotation.

I'm pretty sure that the MX line and the 5x40 line share the same size ag tires. You would need to look further into it but it's possible all of the smaller M series have the same size ag tires.

When I asked my wife if I should get tires that would furthur tear up the areas our tractor currently does, she was adamantly opposed to the R1's! Regardless, they also raise height a bit and I'm low on clearance.
