I found this neat mortar and pestle a couple months ago while out rambling around. I always keep my eyes to the ground, looking for points and pottery...it is a hobby. I have found other mortars before, but never a pestle with one. The pestle was about 3 feet from the mortar and has a flattened side with a dimple in it. Wonder what use the dimple served? The mortar is concave on both sides.

What have you guys found?

Great find Dave.

So far all we've found is trash from the thirties. ie: small scissors, garden cart wheel, "33" ford car pieces, hinges..etc. Like I said, trash.

That is an unique discovery. Have you ever considered checking the past historical archives in your County and researching what native tribes inhabited your region? Or perhaps, even the earliest European settlers? Have a Happy Day.:tractor:

That's a pretty primitive setup. The ones we find around here look very much like European mortar and pestle, with a bowl and long, narrow pestle. Despite Native American claims that they have lived somewhere forever, they moved around a lot. There's no way to tell what peoples created it, though a local archaeologist might be able to date it to an approximate millennium.

Dave, that is really cool. I'm always trying to find artifacts on our farm, whether from Native Americans or just old stuff. Our farm is over 200 years old, and all I've found are lots of horseshoes, a few pretty old bottles and a few broken pieces of old metal hardware.

Looks like a "nutting stone" used by Native Americans
for cracking nuts?

I have found horse shoes and one nice bottle where my great great grandparents house once stood. I have also found what I believe to be a tomahawk head on the land. I would like to find someone that could tell me more about it. To the op nice find. Keep searching.

Buddy of mine goes "Injun Rock" hunting all the time. Finds a good bit of stuff in the Kingstree area on some of his bud's property.

I've seen hundreds of arrowheads (clovis period, woodland period, etc) from him as well as some other stuff, but the coolest thing he has is an old "face jug" made by slaves back in the day. Let me see if I can find a picture of it.
