That is a little pricier because they are basing off the skid steer quick attach plate. I would be looking to buy with a bucket mount. I want the auger on a side where I can see it rather than in the middle where the hood will block my view.

Have you considered a hydraulic 3 pt unit? Put a down pressure kit on it and you would have a digging machine. Put a hydraulic side link on your tractor and you can control all the angles and you can see what the heck you are doing vs looking waaay out in front at your bucket edge and basically loosing the use of your bucket with the auger on the side.

Just a thought.

I have...from what I hear about the hydraulic down pressure kits for 3pt is that they are very lame in comparison. I think the most powerful ones are only 500lbs. My loader bucket will do that WITHOUT even using the hydraulics.

Plus, I have front hydraulics...but I don't have rear remotes.

Do "angles" matter with the loader mount? From what I have seen they seem to be gimble-mounted so they can hang straight with gravity.

Angles won't matter with a loader mounted unit. As far as the down pressure kit, not 100% sure about the 500lb down pressure. What I do know is that I have THE BEST Land Pride pto unit that they make with the high dollar augers and when our ground is dry and hard, forget about drilling anything. I bought the down pressure kit and now in that same ground it may take up to maybe if I don't pay attention 90 seconds to drill a 24" dia hole 4' deep. What used to take literally days with water and waiting for it to soak in now gets drilled in less than 2 minutes dry and hard. I would not call the down pressure kits lame, and think that you would find that every person that has one is satisfied with it. :thumbsup:

I am glad to hear about your experience with your auger. I am trying to not fly "blind" into this purchase. I started by calling the local rental place. He mentioned that they are giving up on renting 3 pt PTO augers. He said too many customers come back within an hour complaining they can't dig holes in the loose shale we have around here. He said others just come back with the digger broken. He told me those that rent the hydraulic auger for the skid steers have reported good results using just standard auger bits. Clearly down pressure is key.

Sorry to drag this back up, but I learned a lot this past weekend.

I borrowed a buddy's Toro Dingo (25 hp, wide track, walk-behind skid steer) equipped with a hydraulic auger. I have no clue of the specs of the auger, but I am pretty sure the Dingo puts out ~20 gpm.

No combination of speed/down pressure would get the standard 2 point auger to dig into my shale. The auger would dig right through the dirt and then just spin on top of the shale.

What does this mean to my discussion about hydraulic auger choice?

1. I NEED a rock bit.
2. I THINK that means I need to maximize torque rather than rpm so I don't stall the auger, correct?
3. Is applying down pressure with a bucket mounted auger "safe"? Does the side loading of the bucket cause and concern?

I am leaning towards either a SSQA mount or maybe a dipperstick mount for the backhoe.

This is a rock bit, Perhaps it might work, bur I would rent one to be sure.

Those are exactly what I am looking at. That first option looks good. I am trying to find out how much replacement tips cost just so I know what I am getting myself into.

Ted and Rick from EA both suggested going with a more powerful unit even if I am at the low end of the GPM rating. This would ensure max power to prevent stalling and deal with heavy down pressure.
