How do I find AG (no hwy tax) Diesel in my area???

/ How do I find AG (no hwy tax) Diesel in my area??? #21
1*I would REALLY like to secure a source of AG Diesel
locally.
2*My goal is to have at least a 55 gal drum onsite eventually.
1*Since they have converted over to ULSD back about 2010 95 to 100 percent of all fuel is the same no matter what they call it.

2*Here is my 2 drum 55 gallon storage system .
The great thing about this system is it is so flexible you can use any combination of 15 30 and 55 gallon drums to acheave most any volume of storage desired.
The most unique thing about this rig is it is self filling which means no moving of heavy drums of fuel.

3*Try to look under oil in your yellow pages, maybe something there.
4* The difficult thing for you is that most places have a 150 gallon minimum purchase to be considered "bulk fuel".
5*In our area bulk fuel, even road and sales tax free actually cost close to or more than at the pump once you factor in delivery fee and
6* a slew of other taxes that make up for the sales and highway.
3*He should look under fuel distrubitors or suppliers
Also look under Home Heating Oil or Fuel Oil as it's the same thinhg as off road or ag diesel .
4*You did not state that quite correctly .
More accurately you should have said: Most places have a 150 gallon minimum purchase before they will deliver .
Even then Some will still deliver if they happen to be delivering in your area.
5*I've never paid a delivery fee for off road .
6*That is not justified because there are no taxes to make up for on off road.
Keith,
7*I also bought 10 gallons at $3.759 locally :)
David
7*WAS This off road?
8*How long will it take you to use up 55 gallons? More air in storage tank = more moisture.
9*Diesel with moisture (condensation from humidity when the ambient air temperature changes) + time = bacteria = trouble in river city (fuel filter and injectors).
10*Neighbor that buys in bulk can probably tell you how long you can safely store deisel.
8*Porper treatment and storage is the key
9*Again proper treatment and storage is the key .
10*Last time I bought fuel was in april 2010.
Still working fine.
My supplier said Diesel should be good up to 2 years .

Mossflower woods-listen to this guy.
12* It takes a lot of seat time to go through 55 gallons of diesel on a hobby farm. You might be using your tractor a lot now becuse it's a new toy:) but wait until the wow factor wears off.
13* I buy it as I need it so I never have any problems the poster above mentioned.
14*Plus, who knows how long that diesel has sat in those large storage tanks at your local independent ag dealer.
15*I have a 5 gallon can and just refill it as needed and my local gas station gets new fresh diesel in every 4-5 days.
16*I know I am buying winter diesel in the winter because he actually post it on the pump when they change the formula from summer to winter
17*I'll gladly play more to know I'm getting fresh stuff. There have been more post about people having problems with old diesel on this site than just about anything.
12*That's what i like about my storage rig you can go with as little as 15 gallons of storage depending on how you set it up.
13*So do I and i never have had any storage problems with it .
14*Don't know about the ag dealers but the bulk plant where my fuel comes from sells lots more than any one little ole gas station does.
15*I got rid of 5 gallon cans when I built this a few years ago .

No way would I ever go back to 5 gallon cans.
16*Winter diesel is simply summer diesel with a little Kero added to it.
17* Just because you buy it at the pump don't mean it's always the freshest.
The bulk plant where my fuel comes from sells lots more than any one little ole gas station does.
In Maryland (low sulfur state),
18*I use fuel oil. (Same tank that heats the house). Been doing it for 19 years and 5-6,000 hours. Works fine.
18*You can't go any better way than that.

MFW,
I too have been working a similar project. I recently acquired a 300 gal tank w/ approx 80 gallons in it. I pulled 45 gallons of "off-diesel" out of the tank, that is all my pump tube would reach. I transferred it into a plastic 55 gallon drum (bought for $12 and cleaned it out). I have to treat it but I plan to do a double treatment of Power Service and then add a water filter and a 10 micron fuel filter to the rotary pump and start using it. Oh, one piece of advice....it was suggested to me to "drain" my old tank as the water would settle to the bottom. I opted to pump it from the top and I am glad I did. I put a stick down in to check and I did have some sediment in the bottom. When I did drain the tank (what was left in it), there was a lot of crud and crap there. Forgot to mention that when I pulled the fuel from the top, I used a cloth towel to help strain any sludge/crud and then the funnel I used had a fine screen on it so I think I did a good job of "screening" it.

My local fuel supplier wants a 150 gallon min. fill order. I'm looking around at others to see if I can take my drum to them. I currently have it on a pallet so I can put it in my truck bed, go get it filled, and off load it in the garage (winter time) and then outside in the warmer months.

I have 164 hrs on my 2010 DK 40SE HST. On a busy week, bush hogging 5 acres and some odds-n-end work, I'll run thru a tank (high/PTO rpms). Otherwise, I can get by on 5 gallons a week. So, I think my 55 drum will work well for now. I bought 2 drums so if I really need it, I can fill the 2nd. Good luck and keep us posted on what you end up doing and how well it works.
Greg

1*That means if you want a special delivery, but many will stop by and top off you drum whenever they are in your area.
Did you ask them about this?
2*I have one supplier who will fill my drum if i take it in but I will have to leave it over night and pick it up the next day .
I also have 2 local gas stations that has off road .

3*Your doing it the hard way .
This rig is self filling and off loads the drum or drums of fuel i haul in.
No skid or skids needed and no tractor and or forks necessary because there aren't any drums of fuel to handle.
4*I have several extra 30 and 50 gallon drums so I can store as little or as much as i want

I tried the truck stop last night and I simply could not figure it out where to find it. I drove around the semi-truck side for 5-6 minutes and could not see anything except the regular filling spots for the semi's.

This seems like it should not be this flipping hard to find.

BUt until I'm getting more seat time, I'm going to put this on a back burner...

Try calling G&G Farm Service in Milford: 804-633-6690. Over the years they have steered me in the right direction for a lot of stuff. Pretty much know where everything Ag related is in Caroline and Spotsylvania counties.

IF you cant find a place locally to purchase it, you can apply to the DMV for a refund of your state taxes ($0.175/gal).. Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

Im not sure how (if?) you can get your federal taxes ($0.244) back though..

here is a website that show you ethanol free gas stations..

Ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada REMEMBER - if they have the one hose for all three grades you wont get the premium gas until the residual in the hose is gone..

good luck

Brian

If the fuel is used in a farming operation, you should be able to use Federal Form 4136 when you file your federal income tax to get credit for taxes paid on fuel.

I think for most of us burning 200 gallons a year is a lot (that is 200 hrs for most of us).

But that would be only $90 to the IRS if we filled out the form. And then it can become a whole home loan issue (trying to get a loan on a farm is hard these days).

Just saying it is probably easier to find off-road.

Oh, I found a bunch of plastic pallets (very heavy duty) from a budweiser plant. I made up a 1x1 steel frame and I keep my fuel barrel in. Use the pickle forks and pallet the whole thing onto the back of the truck, drive into town and get my fuel. Probably illegal as all heck but I have not been popped yet.

I just take a 55 gallon drum to my heating oil supplier. But call first because not all of the home heating oil suppliers around here handle off-road diesel, heating oil and off road diesel are no longer the same.

Because of the switch to low sulfur laws were passed preventing dealers from knowingly selling heating oil, which for a short period of time, was still high diesel. Now everything is low or ultra low sulfur. Lots of diesels counted on the sulfur to lubricate things like injectors and pumps. Off road diesel has oil (or something else) added to heating oil to replace the loss of the sulfur.

I have asked dealers in both VT and NY and they have all said the same thing. Every one of them said they would fill a drum with heating oil if I wanted them to but that they wouldn't recommend it (even the ones who didn't sell off road diesel so they were loosing an easy sale). Others here have a different opinion. For the difference of a couple of cents a gallon more I wouldn't take the chance. So if you find heating oil but not diesel you may want to mix in a diesel lubricating additive.

1*My supplier says HHO and Diesel are the same.
2*But as of 2010 95 to 99 percent of all fuel was changed to only U L S D so basicly we only have 1 fuel now.
3*95 to 99 percent is ultra low sulfur since they quit making the low sulfur stuff back in 2010.
4*There is no difference between on road and off road nowdays.
Additives have allready been added to todays ULSD to repace any lost lubrication not to replace sulfur which was never a lubricant any way .
5* I coverd this in 1-4*
