Oil & Fuel Trans oil qty, YM1700

After my problems last winter with the 3pt lift, where the pump would squeel and no lift, I'm going to sort it now. The suggestion was water in the trans at the bottom, and/or blocked filter.

So I undid the drain plug a little over a pot, but only got a spoonful of water out before the oil ran. So I now need to check the filter behind the 3 bolt plate. Beeing a cheapskate, I thought I'd re-use the old oil as it still looks like new. I know it's not ideal, but funds are short, and the oil is expensive here.

So my question is, how much oil should be in there, hence how big a collecting pot do I need in which to collect it?

after installing the FEL on my tractor it now takes 4-gal + 1 quart
the easy way I keep up with the capacity for my 1700 is ---> 17-quarts
But you probably don't have a FEL so 4-gal will do, or 15.142 Liters
I use the JD-303 from TSC

if you must re-use the fluid, i suggest filtering it with something before you pour it back in, I believe you can get funnels that filter, or you could use an old screen from a door or window..not sure of your situation but I purchased 5 gallons of travelers brand from tractor supply for $35..if you could manage that it would be best and that fluid will be good another 500 hours or so, so you wont need to do that again for years. :thumbsup:

If you will re-use the oil, clean the outside of the transmission perfectly so the oil won't pick up dirt as it dribbles out.

Housepainters filter their paint through a disposable filter bag, or used pantyhose, as they fill their sprayer. I would put a filter like that in the collection bucket.

If possible, put the first and last oil that came out in a transparent jug to examine what junk came out.

When refilling, don't pour the very last oil back in. Junk may have settled to the bottom of your collection bucket. I would buy at least 1 liter of fresh oil to top up the refill.

Smoody hes in sweeden! I know stuff is more expensive there, but i doubt its twice what it is here and thats still in the $75 range for a bucket. After all european gas is only twice ours but thats still crazy.

dont know if its that high. Even if it was $75 is not that bad, i mean compared to $40 or less like we pay yes but in the scheme of things not that bad, seeing as they pay like $6/gallon for gas.

Well after draining it out, it didn't look anywhere near as clean as it did on the dipstick. So I stumped up nearly 1000 swedish kronor (about $140) for 2O litres of fresh. I tried everywhere for cheaper, but competition is a dirty word here. Ha, someone has to pay all the social costs.

The filter was pretty clean, and in light of the small amount of water that came out before the oil, I'm not entirely sure why I was having the pump squeel and lift problems on the really cold days.

One last question though, is the dipstick measurement taken with the stick screwed in, or just placed in the hole? On my Honda bike it's with the stick just resting in the hole, so it's got me thinking.

My books on ym2002d and ym220/226 say with stick just sitting on top, not screwed in.

I spent hours digging through Yanmar manuals and concluded they mean just set a threaded dipstick in its hole to get a reading, but shove in a slide-in dipstick for a reading. If anyone can cite more authoritative information I would like to see it.
