I have a Jonsered 910E, my main falling and bucking saw. It has sounded like the muffler was beginning to fail and upon close inspection it was apparent that the spark arrester is completely missing from the muffler assembly.

Contacted one of the Internets international supplier of Jonsered parts and after many Ebay and such searches, including his extensive inventory, the muffler is no longer produced. He was able to supply me with a used muffler that was not equipped with a spark arrester. He also sent along several apark arrester screens for newer saws that I intend to experiment with, brazing the screens into the area on the old muffler where the screen us usually located.

In looking at the 910E parts manuals the muffler with the spark arrester has the same part number as for the Jonsered 910-EV, 920 and 930 saws. The common part number shown is 504 72 00 21.

The primary reason I am presenting this thread is due to the power of this forum. In following TractorByNet.com forums I have seen problems solved, parts located and the seeming impossible accomplished via the assistance of forum mumbers and guests.

The very best source of parts for these 1970 model Jonsered saws I have found is Chainsawr World's largest inventory of Chainsaw Parts in VT. There are many very good suppliers of new and used Jonsered parts in the world. I am in search of any and all possible sources to acquire the special shaped muffler required for my 910E

In the State of Oregon the Forestry Department requires that all chainsaws used in the woods of our state to be equipped with approved spark arrester exhaust systems. We are subject to significant fines, restrictions and/or banishment from operating in private or public lands if not equipped as indicated in State law. The smoke arrester issue is a big deal, especially if you are found in violation of the law.

At this point in time I should probably acquire a new saw, but this particular Jonsered 910E has been extremely reliable, is well ballanced, power match to the 36 inch bar is right on. With routine maintenance and sharpening this saw never complains and responds to the needs of the situation with unfailing certainty.

I hope to locate and acquire a couple additional mufflers for this chainsaw that are properly equipped with an approved spark arrester system. Your thoughts, recommendations and assistance in this persuit would be sincerely appreciated.

Well, it looks like you are going to have to modify one of the screens you got now to work.

Unless you can happen upon someone that has a 910 parts saw lying around

LD1,

The primary reason I explained my muffler situation on this forum was that over a period of months I had scoured the United States, literally from shore to shore and after that, with well known chainsaws like the Jonsered, it was difficult to imagine that I had been unable to locate numerous sources of parts supply for a truly international product.

I noticed this forum has a large following internationally, particularly in Europe and specifically Sweeden, initially, the country of origin for the Jonsered brand.

My hope is that by taking my search for Jonsered 910E hard to locate parts to an international knowledge base, additional resources for these items might be located for those of us that have hung our hat on very high quality equipment that no longer has parts availability, even though, the saws themselves are not ready for the junk pile.

It would be tremendous if someone in the worldwide following of the TractorByNet group of forums was aware of additional suppliers of parts for these great chainsaws so we can keep them in operation and functioning at high levels.

I asked a friend about this. He's big into Jonsered. He says that the number you are trying to find was discontinued back in the early 80's. His notes show this PN as not having a spark arrestor at all. That PN was replaced by:

504 72 00 22 Complete muffler w/spark arrestor
504 09 02 01 Screen
723 12 85 05 Bolt for the screen

Maybe you'll have better luck looking for these PN's.

Good luck.

CWOSCSU,

Thanks much for doing some research relative to my 910E with the burned out muffler

The numbers I had posted came from some parts manual reference material I located on the internet or from the original manuals that were supplied with the saw.

From your post I got the impression that your friend indicated that the part number I listed had been discontinued, That is what I had found out as well. I was wondering if the numbers he supplied are new numbers for the same parts and that they should actually be available by using those numbers in place of the discontinued part numbers I had been referencing?

Where the part numbers he quoted also discontinued at some point in time, but they are newer and therefore more likely to be numbers that would could help me locate the spark arrester equipped muffler?

Ideally, it would be great if they are current part numbers that are identifying parts that should be in warehouses or in dealer inventories. If you could clearify that for me it would be fantastic.

In the mean time I will begin some research and make some contacts and see what I can locate utilizing the part number you posted.

Every new lead I get seems to be helpfull in getting me closer to locating and hopefully acquiring the spark arrester equipped muffler for the 910E. There is no doubte about it, this is may favorite saw for heavier cutting. The primary weakness the 910E presented was that the vibration dampening handle mounts are subject to being damaged if the operator is hard on the rear handle. That was the reason I acquired the saw originally. I was in a local saw shop that was a Jonsered dealer and a logger tradded the saw in after only a months use because the kept damaging the rubber handle mounts. I must be a whimp or something, but I have never had any problems with the mounts, but when I use the saw the potential weakness is in the back of my mind so I adjust my technique unconsciously and have been able to avoid those problems.

Fortunately, I got the chainsaw for a very low price and it has provided me with many years of great service, without any complaints as long as routine maintenance is kept up and the chain is sharp.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Nick,

There not new numbers for the same part. They are the numbers for the updated muffler / spark arrestor. Your number wasn't really discontinued, rather it was superseded by the new numbers.

From what he said, in the early 80's Jonsered had problems getting there saw's Forest Service qualified. So, they redesigned the muffler, but made it modular so the new muffler would replace mufflers of different design. Dealers were replacing these when a saw came in for service or at customer request. He doesn't remember any type of recall.

As for availability, he thinks they should be available, but doesn't know for sure. He hasn't work on any older saw in a while. But he did say those numbers, in particular the screen were used into the 90's and on a few different models.

Hope this helps.

CWOSCSU,

Your information clairifies my questions and should help significantly in the persuit of locating and acquiring the muffler, spark arrester system designed for the 910E. It's always nice when you know what your are looking for and it is especially nice when you know what to call the item so suppliers don't need to deal with a guessing game.

Once again, thank you for the assistance and thank your friend for his help in this process as well.
