Need 10,000 lb trailer for new Tundra

Most manufacturers state the weights but a 10k 18ft trailer empty should be right around 2k lbs empty.
Don't mind the nay slayers that think you need a dually for 10k. Depending on your truck config, you'll be fine with a new Tundra.

Definitely check some of the manufacturer's sites and specs. I think you'll find a 10K trailer weights closer to 3000 lbs than 2000lbs.

It's just one example, but a BigTex 10K 18' equipment trailer weighs 2440lbs, and a tilt back weight 3070lbs.

A Tundra with std cab can tow 9800lbs.

So if you get a tilt back, your carrying capacity is 9800-3070=6730lbs

A 5520 weight about 6000lbs stripped down. Add a 1000lbs for loaded tires, and about 2000lbs for a loader and bucket, and you are way over weight for both the trailer and truck.

I know I'm fine with the Tundra. The Big Tex brochure mentioned earlier lists a rugged 16' trailer at 2400 lbs and 18' slightly higher. The 16' is fine for my use since at most I'll carry a total of 5000--6000 lbs but every now and then a little more. The big V8 Tundra is rated at nearly 10,000 lbs.
Presently I have a smaller V8 2005 CrewMax Tundra--2WD--(tow rated 6400 lbs) and it works fine with my 16' 1700 lb trailer and 4200 lbs of load but I could use just a little more oomph and an easier ramp system. Plus the 4WD will be nice. I have used 16' for nearly 20 years and while it is enough for my needs, I might go with 18'.
So it looks like 2400 lbs +/- for the trailer and a fold up ramp system will work for me. I have towed for 40 years.

You wrote "2 -1/4" ball. I think you meant 2 -5/8"

At a truck weight of around 6000# you can get into some issues towing if you don't load with enough tongue weight. Light tongue will make the tail wag the dog.

I have a Tundra,

I would recommend a 10,000 trailer in the 18 - 20 ft range with brakes on both axles.

Avoid the tilt model, it's too heavy.

You will need a Weight Dist hitch ( I use one).

You will will need a brake control, if not already equipped.

Please realize, not all Tundras are the same.
Mine has every piece of tow equipment that Toyota offers, to include a heavier rear axle(larger ring & pinion & larger wheel bearings).

My tractor is about 5,000LB, add the trailer add the extra people & gear, you are at the limit of the truck.

Mine tows fine, keeps up with traffic (if I choose to), stop very effectively.

A lot of people think you need a 3/4 ton or larger truck to move a riding lawn mower, that is just not true.

Shop around, talk to the trailer builders in your area, you can find what you need.

Bottom line, do your research, respect your truck and be safe.

The Tundra is fine - you will be in your weight rating and legal with a non tilting trailer. Also it is well known Toyota underrates it trucks, so being within the rating is not a problem.
I have had 8000lbs on my 07 Tundra V8 Double cab long bed 2200 pound trailer and it pulled smooth, stopped GREAT and I had NO safety concerns at all. Don't believe this whole "the X is too small" or "it is not enough truck", if so why is it built and rated for that? If you are not towing at least every week a heavy 1/2 can do the weight safely and without risk. Now if you want to tow 20K the answer would be different...........

I purchased a new 12K 22' trailer last year. Everything I was looking at was 18' and 20'. I decided to pursue the 22' instead and the guy I was dealing with contacted the shop that builds the trailers and they were able to build me a 22'. In moving my tractor with FEL and and a rear mounted implement I wouldn't want anything shorter. In hind sight a little longer wouldn't hurt. As someone else mentioned, load balance on the trailer is very important in regards to how it tows. Having a little extra room will allow you to position the load in just the right spot. I have the stand up ramps and like them. I have had to tie the ramps to the rear mounted implement because the supports wouldn't reach through the implement(8' wide disc harrow was wider than trailer). Ramps rated to handle the kind of load the trailer can handle can get heavy after lugging around all day.

You hit on two good points.

- For one, you don't need a 3/4 ton for everything, now. The "1/2 tons" are light years ahead of where most were 10-20 years ago. In fact, nowadays, the "1/2 ton", "3/4 ton" ect monikers really do not apply. The 15xx, 25xx, 35xx series used by most manufacturers does relate the different series, but it really does not relate to 1/2, 3/4, 1ton ect, any more.

The Tundra does not use that number series does it? It is not a Tundra 1500?

- Be safe. Good point; there are a lot of people who do not do that. Dont overload it, don't sit in the fast lane passing everyone, even with the brakes and controllers out there now dont get to close...

A lot of people think you need a 3/4 ton or larger truck to move a riding lawn mower, that is just not true.

Bottom line, do your research, respect your truck and be safe.
