Why I love my cab

There are a bunch of threads on here about OS v cab with hearing/being in tune with your machine, comfort, protection etc. all mentioned. In the end, for most of us I guess it comes down to a balance of the individual, machine, type of work, experience, condition of tractor/equipment etc. I prefer cabs and my brother refers OS; still if I could afford it, I would have a nice late model HST 35/40 HP OS sitting around too.

If I could afford it, I would have one of each model tractor produced...Both cab and open station...

Many seasons of running hay, bailing wheat straw, raking and round bailing corn stalks and blowing snow in minus degree temps, convinced me that the only thing an OS tractor was good for was sitting on in the showroom and looking at the new floor mat between my feet.

I would take an OS tractor for mowing established pasture or taking the rubbish cans to the roadside for pickup (in the FEL), but that's it.

There is something satisfying about being in a field in front of a dust bomb producing round bailer on a 101 degree, 95% humidity day, with the ambient temperature at 68, a good CD in the player, crossing no tilled headlands on an air ride seat and when the field smooths out, sipping on a cold beverage......

or

In the winter, blowing and plowing snow, with the outside temperature at 5 above and the ambient at 68, a good CD in the player, air ride seat adjusted properly, swivelled to the side to see the rear mount blower, sipping on a hot cocoa, in my shirt sleeves and jeans......

You guys get the drift, I'm sure.

However....

There are a few drawbacks. Cab tractors can be akward to manuver at times. There is way more stuff to damage and all damage is costly.

I inadventently left the door open and snagged a tree once. Kubota's have full temepered and formed glass doors. That was a thousand dollar mistake, well 900 bucks for the glass and 100 for the gasket and handle..... and I have a thousand dollar deductible......

Amazing how fast a glass door breaks. Was there one second...and gone the next.......:laughing:

When I went to cab units, I had to run the perimeter of all the fields I run hay on and trim trees and check clearances.

The positives do outweigh the negatives for me at least......

I do remember to keep the doors closed at all times now.

Finally....

A comparable OS unit to a cab unit is cheaper so if money is an issue, go OS and like it.

Or take the plunge, increase the payment or deplete the cash account and be confortable.

Nothing beats an 8 hour day in the tractor and smelling just as good when you finish as when you started.

One word BEE's. If you've ever been attacked by a swarm on an open tractor I guarantee the next day you be puttin money down on a full cab with AC.

Happened to me and that was it.

I am a small size land owner or a 10 cent tree farmer. I bought a used tractor. The fact it has a cab was new to me as the previous two were OS. I want into it not knowing what my long term reaction would be. I love it.
My tractor is 19 years old so the cab is all steel with steel/glass upper and lower doors. It has no heat, A/C or radio(rear window slides open 1/3). There is a metal fan in the upper right of the front that I use as a/c in summer by turning it towards my face and as a windshield defroster in winter. The previous owner had a light bar on top and powered it with a hot point set up. I may get a inexpensive rear window defroster and see what that does at 3am plowing snow before I head to work. The fan helps but a little more warm air would be appriciated. (talk about spoiled).
I operate year round. The doors are completely off in summer. I occasionaly work in the woods at a friends lot one mile from home during summer. If I get caught in a passing storm I have some shelter. It keeps the boiling sun off me.
The cab makes for easy access during a snow storm, my seat is always dry.
I guess after owning a cab tractor I would defnatly make it a priority when/if
I upgrade.

This is m second cab tractor. Both cabs were aftermarket. I like staying dry, and a heater when its a blizzard outside. The first one had curtains and it was warm as toast in the winter.
