Backhoe JD 400C steering problems

I have a JD 400C that the power assist on the steering just gave up. I was operating the backhoe when I heard a clunking sound but by the time I stopped the tractor it had quit. I fired the tractor back up and all seemed well until I went to move. Everything else seems to work normally just no power assist steering and the manual steering is a little much!
Does anyone have any experiences with the above?

Do other hyd work properly? Will it manual steer in both directions?

Are you low on fluid? Is one of the hoses have a leak. Does the power assist have power from the hydro pump or a belt on the engine? I am not fimiliar at all with your unit. Just guessing. When you use the search engine on tractorbynet for steering problems for your/similar tractors does it offer any insight? Sorry I can not be more helpful. Looking fwd to JD owners with the same problem in the past to speak up. ----fuse

Yes all hydraulic functions still work there are no external leaks, fluid level is good and it manually steers in both directions. The power assist for the steering appears to come frome the hyd. pump which is suppling fluid to what appears to be two hoses that enter the side of the trans just below the steering column. I would guess what ever is wrong is in the column itself and it looks like I can take it off.

Do you have a better model number than 400C? That doesn't come up in jdparts, other than a hydraulic dump. May be a letter missing?

Could it be a "400" or 401C instead of 400C?

All the JD utility tractors similar to yours of that era only have "one line" supplying steering that I've seen.
