HST Wine, Not any more

Not sure if this was suggested, when I get my BX I will try it and report, but seems to me that if a guy did a rubber bungie cord wrap around the ROPS it may kill the resonsnce that is objectionable. FWIW. Foam is a good idea but it will kill any future possible wiring for accessory lights , beacon etc.
unless you surface mount the wires. 2cents

I have always left my rops up on my L2800 but had to do some work the last couple of days with it folded down. I didnt notice any difference in the whine up or down. It would be ez to foam fill the rops but not sure if you would gain anything on my model. Has anyone one tried it on the L2800/L3400?

So now we need a whole new thread on " How to blow/suck the
foam out of a ROPS ......." **** !

I agree. I removed my rops long time ago and why is this related to HST whine???? :D

According to several, the bx product has a whine while running that some thought was caused by the hydrostatic drive. Turns out it is resonance coming from the rops tube and then numerous fixes have been proposed.

Strange, it works in cars. Oh, I mean I heard it works well and completely expands inside cars...

I worked in NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) in the auto industry for 26 years. We use a two part foam to seal the body and to stiffen certain body sections. The foam is injected with a special machine that mixes the two parts as they are injected.

I think that Great Stuff would work if you injected it in a series of small sections at a time, though this would require drilling more holes. It does require moisture to cure and spraying in water first will accelerate the reaction and ensure complete curing.

What you are doing with the foam is suppressing and damping a shell resonance of the ROPS. You could probably wrap tape around the outside or apply a damping layer of stuff like this Amazon.com: Roof Gutter Repair Tape, 6": Home Improvement to the outside to achieve the same effect.

How about filling it with sand?

Or maybe roofing tar? Heat it to pour it in.

Or paint?

All you'd need to do to keep it simple is fish 1 or 2 layers of nylon rope from side to side( inside rops tubing). This alters the hollow tube resonance, doesn't clog or fill the tube with uncertain materials, has no rusting or water trapping issues, allows wire runs at future dates, and is removable if need be. It won't rot, makes no noise, should stop the whine, and can't "leak". Simple, inexpensive, and its all inside and alters nothing for safety( save for a hole on each side in the bottom of rops.

Just a suggestion : -)

That's a great catch but I am with whoever said it here: once I know it is jsut amplified noise, it would not bother me anymore. I wear ear protection for the tractor anyway, makes the seat time much more comfortable.

I wonder if the foam filling trick works with canopies, too?

The only issue I can foresee is if I fill it with me in it I'll be trapped and if I fill it from the outside I'll never see the steering wheel again.

Maybe someone with a cab can try it and report back..

I would think sand would add quite a bit of weight and not in the place you want it. Tar or paint would be fairly heavy also and just sound messy to work with IMO. And all 3 would require a larger hole to effectively fill.
