What's the collective wisdom of the two approaches? Any "technical" reason to not just chop them in place? I'm not clear if there are impacts to the lawn (not a showplace lawn) and/or mower (JD 757 ZTR). We've either had a bumper crop this year or the squirrels are getting slower!

yeah - bumper crop this year!

If the squirrels don't get them, I hit them with the mower(the black walnuts, not the squirrels ;)). I do it while them when I'm mulching Fall leaves.

If you leave the fallen walnuts in a pile to decay, they kill the lawn under the pile. If you mulch them, they disappear.

I had an initial concern that they would come rocketing out of the mower deck discharge, but they don't. And they don't even mark the blades.

It is too bad that you don't like to crack them and eat them. They are fine in ice creme. I hope we have a lot of them at our rock farm..

Unless an individual has an allergic reaction to walnuts, why not eat them? Yes, they are a total pain in the BUTT to crack and pick the pieces out, but there are trays, tools and accessories to ease the hardship of cracking both the black and English walnut varieties. The Holidays are rapidly approaching and in many parts of this Country walnuts are used in various recipes, especially desserts. If you or your Family don't like walnuts, have you considered bagging up some small bags of them and giving them to friends and neighbors? I am in no way attempting to tell you what to do in regards to your mowing, chopping; etc question, but some of your friends and neighbors would probably really appreciate a small gift bag of those walnuts with a bow or ribbon wrapped around the bag. Just a thought. Who knows what domino effect this kind gesture might bring about? :):licking:

Hmmm... maybe if I feed them black walnuts in the Fall, they'll start eating my dandelions in the Spring.

We used to put 5 gallon pails out by the road with the nuts in them and a "free" sign--no takers! May have to try again--agree that everyone could use a little extra in these current times. IF you were going to eat them--do you dry them with the outer shell on and then "peel", crack and pick out the meat? The black walnuts are pretty messy (stain your fingers and clothes kind of mess)!

Maybe others do it differently, but this is the way I was taught. First remove the hulls as soon as possible. If you don't, the hulls will transfer a bitter and strong flavor to the meat of the nuts. Then wash them in a tub or water. The full nuts will sink and the semi empty ones will float. Dry them for two or three weeks spread out on any surface that allows air flow. We always used the old screen material that are on the common front or back porch screens=you probably know the type. After 2 or 3 weeks of drying, crack them and enjoy. If you don't use the nuts right away, just put them in the freezer in a plastic container. The butter tubs that you buy margarine in the store work just fine. They will last for a long time in the freezer and retain their flavor. Putting them in the refrigerator only works for a couple of days. And last but not least, do wear plastic gloves. This will reduce the staining of your hands. Don't fret, the stain won't remain permanently on your skin, but it's pretty hard to get out of clothes and fabric.

Back home when i was a kid we would dump black walnuts in the gravel drive and drive over them with the car till the hulls were worn off.
After that they were picked up and stored to dry.
Don't remember how long that all took as it was a long time ago.

So those things are black walnuts? Someone up the street has trees by the road and the black walnuts are smashed all over the road...Big mess...:confused2:
